4wd cycling

My wife's 01 Explorer has the auto 4wd system. Every now and then but with increasing frequency it seems to go into 4wd by itself. This occurs on dry pavement. The switch is in the auto position and I understand when the system senses a loss of traction it goes into 4wd. Haven't gone out to take a look at it as it only has happened when my wife has been driving it. Shutting it down seems to clear it until the next occurance. Any ideas to get me going here. Thnx

This one sounds like the complaints I have read here about the wheel speed sensors being dirty. A simple cleaning of them usually resolved the problem. I am sure someone will follow up with a bit more detail as I only know what I have seen pass by in previous posts.

Thnx for that. Still searching thru the forums. Came across a sensor mounted on the transfer case that seems to be a cause of 4wd issues. Haven't found any wheel speed sensor discussion yet, but as stated earlier still looking. Drove the rig today but couldn't get it to happen.

the 97 has the sensors in the transfer case, they are held in with 10mm bolts, take them out and clean them, make sure the tires have the same pressure all the way around, as this will send the wrong signal to the controller.
