I'm coming over from the V-10 and Excursion area. When walmart was selling off the remaining 5w20 MC oil and filters, I bought alot of each. My question is this: What is the shelf life for this oil in an unopened quart bottle? What is the shelf life for a opened quart of oil? and lastly, is there a shelf life for an oil filter kept inside the house in a/c? I did not want the filters to start rusting out from the humid weather here in KY.
i keep my oilfilters in the box in the garage.... and ive never seen any problems, they are oiled inside to keep them in good shape...as well as the carboard box should soak up any airborn moister.... as for the oil, i dont think oil "goes bad"
Valvoline tech folks told me the shelf life of motor oil in the original package is indefinite. I have heard that heat is bad as is freezing temps. I keep my 180 quart, 5 year stash in the cellar where it ranges about 40F to 74F.
Oil's shelf life should be practically indefinite since since water or ozone can't get into a closed bottle. And the plastic bottle would melt well before heat can have any serious effect on it. The only thing I would worry is some possible separation over a long period of time.
However, filters, especially the ones made with paper would can degrade in various ways over a period of time, so I wouldn't stash up too much of those.
I like to use oil, 30 days or less, after it is processed into the plastic 1 quart containers, 4 0r 5 quart jugs. Once i notice oil is over 30 days, I frown, then dump the oil unused into gallon containers, to be properly recycled. In my previous posts, when I say I say I use clean, crisp, fresh Mobil 1, I mean it!!!!! ED :>)
(PS If you beleive me, let me know ASAP. I have oceanfront real estate to sell to you in Arizona...LOL!!)
The NAPA filters come sealed in plastic.......should keep them kickin for long enough. Unless you see yourself buying up hundreds of filters, the expiration date of an unused filter sealed in plastic might be after yours.
As for the life of oil on the shelf...... well, many of the ingrediants are already a million or so years of age...... whats the half life of a plastic jug?
We have oil on the farm for tractors sittin in drums been open over 5 or 6 years ....and its still kickin.

I've never seen a filter that came sealed in plastic. Although I only used Fram/Pennzoil, Purolator, Motorcraft, and Wix.
None of the napa gold filters i've bought come wrapped in plastic
just come in a box.Maybe they come wrapped in plastic if you live
in area that has alot of humidity, never seen it in washington. I
know your thinking it rains alot here ,it does, but the humidity is
not like you guys over there.
