Shudder on hard acceleration

I did some searching and this subject has come up, just no real definite answers or solutions.

I took delivery of my '05 CC/KR/SB last Thursday. I love this truck, the ride is amazing and it is much quieter in the cab. Granted I am comparing it to a '00 Super Cab, which is still a great truck, just doesn't compare to my new one.

Anyways, I have about 120 miles on it and pulled my travel trailer (about 5K) home from the storage facility and noticed the shudder under acceleration as soon as I took off with it. I hadn't really been getting on it much before, trying to take it relatively easy on the break-in. It is only about 5 miles from storage to home and I still took it pretty easy with this few miles on it. I can hear the shudder more than feel it. It is only between about 1700 and 2200 RPM's. It is also there without the trailer, although much less noticeable.

I will get it to the dealer hopefully this week, but I want to have as many facts to show them when I bring it in. I don't want them trying this and trying that and guessing at what might be wrong. So has anyone else had this and then one thing fixed it? Is it the carrier bearing? Or are there shims needed to adjust the pinion yoke angle?

Thanks for any advice.

The book says you need to drive 500 miles before you tow. Make sure you don't tell the dealer you were towing at 120 miles.

Thanks, but if towing a 'light' trailer 5 miles is going to cause a problem, Ford has some major problems.

Somebody tried blaming my tranny problems on my 550 on this too. We started plowing before it had 500 miles on it, never mind the fact that TS's were dropping like flies left and right at the same time.

Sorta stupid, IMO, I buy a truck to work with and I have to pay somebody to drive it 500 miles before I can work with it? Whatever.

The same thing happened to me. I had just over 600 miles on my '06. I was towing my 23' trailer and noticed a shudder on hard acceleration. At first I thought it was the tires, but after a couple more times of it happening, I believe it might be something else. Mark, did you ever discover what this was on your truck?

No, not yet. I told them about the TSB and they reflashed it. I am still in amazement over this. Like a reflash is going to fix a shudder\vibration in the driveline. Idiots.

Any chance I could entice one or two of you true diesel mechanics\techs to move to Michigan, so I have some faith in my repairs?

On the good side, the steering wheel shimmy is 10X better, still there a little, but nothing like before.

There is a different TSB that explains how to shim that carrier bearing for a shudder. It describes a shudder that is worse with a load, or only happens when it's loaded. It sounds like that's what you need.

My old dealer with the crappy sales reps apparently has a better service dept than the new one. Shudder is gone with the installation of shims.

I have the same problem with my 05. I received a number of 1/16" shims from my dealer but I haven't got it worked out yet. What was the thickness you ended up using?

I will have to check mine next time I tow I don,t remember noticing this before 12K on my truck. But I also don't usually accelerate hard to keep my egt's down.

I have about 3/4" of shims in mine but I also have a 4" lift and a short bed which will compound the angle problem.
Good Luck

Hi all, I have a 4"lift c/c short bed on 35" tires, and have noticed the shudder while towing. It also seems to do it on hard acceleration. 3/4 inch shim did the trick?

It will depend on the truck. The dealership service manual has the limits allowed (in terms of angle of the driveshaft).
I can't recall it off the top of my head, but 3deg for the first half of the shaft, and 5 deg for the second half rings a bell.

Easiest way to do it, is shim it down until it stops.
