I have a 94 ranger and just noticed a coolant leak, but it seems to leak only when the engine is cut off. I can see the coolant leaking down to the crank and onto the oil pan, where could this be coming from?? I can see some coolant as far up as on the bottom side of the water pum and on the engine block where the water pump connects. Could this be any other leak than the water pump?? IT runs nice and cool and only leaks after the truck is shut off, any ideas
Your description does make it sound like a water pump leak. Having a small puddle on the ground with the engine off is often how it starts. A worn out water pump will gradually start leaking more and eventually make noise as the pump's bearing fails.
Coincidentally, www.RockAuto.com sells water pumps! A rebuilt Cardone water pump costs about $20 for the 2.3L and 3.0L and about $40 for the 4.0L. New Airtex, ACDelco, and Beck Arnley water pumps are also available. Don't shorten the life of the replacement water pump by over tightening the belt.
Thanks, is their any tips I should now before attempting the new water pump installation, I belive I have to pull of the timing cover to do the installation. Anyone have the instruction for a 94 ranger 4cyl
Sorry to keep trying to sell you stuff, but we also carry the Haynes repair manual for the '93 to '00 Ford Ranger ($13.05). Look under "Literature" in our catalog. Some more generic advice is do not over tighten the mounting bolts. It is easy to crack a water pump's cast metal body.

You might as well get new upper and lower hoses while you're in there. There is also a product that you can add to your coolant that floureces (sp?) under black light. You might want to try that to help pinpoint any other leaks if they are there (especially the radiator). If your radiator is still original equip. you might want to replace that too. Average $140 and about 2hrs' simple labor, 2 screws on the shroud, 2 screws on the radiator and 2 clamps on the hoses. Pull those and it just lifts right out.
I got my waterpump and the thermostat out this evening, but I still did not get that timing belt cover off, how do you do that, I unscrewed the 1 screw that is sorta in the center of it and poped off all of the places where it snaps together, the plastic seems to go inside behind the crank and I can pull up on the timing cover but that is holding it in the rest of it is loose. Also should I put another timing belt on while I have all of this out of the truck. I am going to try and install the waterpump and thermostat tommorow
the cover should come off. I think there is a tab or two on the bottom of the cover, should be eight or so total. if the timing belt is original, you might as well change it with everything already off. Just make sure you have a heavy duty impact wrench to get that crank bolt off and a harmonic balancer puller to pull the harmonic balancer off.
I can see that the whole cover is loose but there is a piece of plastic that goes behind the crank, I can try and pull it out but afraid it might break
