Changing the gear oils

I am changing the gear oil in the rear end, tranfer case and the transmission. It is a manual shift.

What is the prefered gear oil(s) to use?
I saw where 75w-90 should be good for New Mexico, any thoughts?

Thanks!

1984 Ford F250 XLT 4x4 'The Beast'
250k - 360k miles(? - God only knows) on drive train.
50k- 150k on this engine.

if you have good seals I would go with a synthetic like amzoil it has a better cling factor than petroluem base gear oil and creats lea\ess resistace I live in minnesota and on cold winter days for the first couple of miles i would hardly have to use the brakes with petro based gear lube after changing to amzoil it doesn't matter winter summer 90* or - 20* the truck rolls the same and shifts the same the Ford book recomends 80w-90 so you'll have an Idea

Well, this is a work truck and gets about 500 miles of use A YEAR. So spending 4 x the amount on gear oil is just not worth it.

So you say 80w-90? That makes more sense then 75w-90. That would be to thin. The 80w sounds better for what I do and it does not get that cold around here to warrent 75w.

Thanks, I'll get some next week and take care of this before I go get wood.

Most any gear oil will do you well. As for 75w90 or 80w90, its not likely you nor your truck will be able to tell the difference, certainly in New Mexico.Exxon gear oil will do the job very well.
Also Chevron Delo just may do you even better, if you can find it.
Also any of the Exxon/Mobil and the Chevron/Texaco/Havoline products will do a good job for you, as Im sure will hundreds of others.

I agree, you do not need a high dollar synthetic lube.

THank you peppy. I do like Chevron products and I think I saw the Chevron Delo oil here at one of the stores. New Mexico is a big Chevron supplier. Gas stations on every corner and all major towns and highways. And the products are plentiful. Go accross the border to Colorado and nothing. It is hard to find a Chevron until you get to Denver (what an arm pit of a city).

Thanks again.
