A good friend if mind just bought a 1985 Bronco. It has a 4" lift, newer engine, trans, brakes and exhaust. He paid $2500.00 for it. It came an extra tail gate. The rust is pretty bad on it. However, he bought it to use, not to look at.
What should he beware of? Any problem's with this year? The engine is a 351. It wanders when going down the highway at around 60 mph. And now the engine started to rattle in higher RPM's.
He has had it for only about 1 week. I told him that I would ask here.
For the wandering problem, it could be the alinment. That model is pretty good there isn't anything to much to look for, but if he wants any parts for his bronco he could get them from a 80-86 Bronco.
Another problem that he is having with it, is around 3000 RPM it starts to run rough and clatter's. He pulled the valve cover's on both side's and all felt good and tight. This only happen's every once in a while. It take's a good reving to get it to act up. At about 60 mph it will start to run rough. I think that it might be a timing chain. If not that, what else might it be?
The reason that I am asking for him is that he does not have a computer.
maybe try a new ignition control box. I have seen that happen in the late 70's models of Broncos & F150's... My father's old 77 F150 did the same thing. Run great at low speeds, but would run like crap once you hit highway speeds...
You also may want to check the timing. It is possible that the vacumm advance is advancing the timing too far, and causing it. If it was the timing chain, it would run like crap 99% of the time...

twolf tell your friend that just because the previous owner said the parts were new doesn't mean they can't have problems. i have purchased plenty of things new that wouldn't work right of the box or the longevity of the part didn't last as much as it should have.
I know on the late 70's models, the control box mounted on the driver's side inner fenderwell. On an 85 though, I wouldn't have the slightest idea if Ford was still doing that, or if they moved it to the distributor, like a (bad word) Chevy...
a 85 is a 351W not 351M. Ford used their last stock of 351M's for the first half 0f 82 and then started using 351W's for the rest of the Bronco timeline.
yes i knew that, i ddint read the year... sorry... yea if its an 85 its prolly that grey recotangle mounted on the distributor (the module) and it requires a stupid special tool to get it out
