My 84 Ford F150 xlt gets around 10 mpg on a good day - is a toonup really gonna help that any? What else can I do? It has dual exaust, glasspack. Will taking that stuff off help? I love this truck, but, I haul junk sometimes I dont race the thing. hehe

These older motors could all probably use a few new parts. Some folks get pretty good mpg, others like you and I are making out worse. I was only getting 7mpg, but it was literally dumping gas in the carb. I put a rebuild kit in it and hooked some stuff back up that had been disconnected. It's getting better but still running rich.
During these years, the specific systems changed a lot. I barely know mine and couldn't say what might be under your hood as far as smog, carb and spark controls go. Do you happen to know what motor, carb, distributor your rig has?
Your tire size, transmission and axle gear ratios can affect mileage as it changes the motor rpm's versus road speed. Lots of uphill with your foot in it and hauling a load can make mpg drop like a rock.
With some more info, others here can perhaps be more specific with suggestions.

Yip! yur probly right. It makes sence, I'm new to all this stuff but it's interesting. I've been learning the little stuff to keep em running, now I gatta learn details. Hmmm. Thanks- Misti 3090 from Texas.
What engine do you have? standard or auto trans? 4x4 or 2wd? Many variables here. More detail leads to more answers. A tune-up can only help, at least in the under load conditions. Tune ups include more than a set of wires or plugs or a cap and rotor. You need to check the timing as well, and set the carb up, or rebuild and then set the carb as well. Replace potential leaking vacuum hoses, the list could go on to replacing worn parts such as a cam and lifters to get things to run right. If the engine is really worn, there's no substitution for a rebuild, but that would require a compression check at the very least.
Thank you, great suggestion. Its a 302 enguine auto trans 4x2. I will be posting pics as soon as I pic them up, watch for 'em. This F-150 xlt has been souped up for racing and I'm having to tone it down a little and it dont like the idea. It likes to be hard driven. I dont know much about it yet but I'm headed the right direction. lol And it has over 150,00 miles on it and strong as a horse.

Define souped-up. 12:1 pistons, 600 lift cam, and Holly 850???? Or maybe just headers, a yellow supercoil, 8mm wire, and some wide road hugger tires?? Hot rod mods don't get good MPG. Simple mods can help. Tuned correctly with good plugs, wires, and good cap all help. Headers will breathe better. A bit taller tire will contribute. Correct tire pressure is overlooked by a lot of people and should be checked often, especially if you have been around construction or through a yard or field. I've had more masquite thorns than nails.
