Currently, '02 7.3, 6-speed, chip, stock exhaust, minus muffler but still has resonator.
Basically I'm looking for a good 4" system (with a 4" downpipe) with a non-flutter muffler, and I'm trying to figure out, which way to go to with cat or no cat (or resonator) and what type of muffler to get etc..
Here's my questions:
1. Which is more restrictive the stock muffler or the stock resinator?
2. I looked and didn't find a cat, so is the the resonator it all there is up front?
3. Will a 4" exhaust with no resonator or cat cause any 'check engine' lights to come on? If not, should I go with just muffler and no cats?
4. What kind of muffler is the best for non-flutter sound and semi-quiet but yet still flows well?
5. And lastly, I'm wonderin' to get a kit (say Magnaflow or somethin) and get it all welded together (instead of clamping it myself) or just have the local shop (who is great) just build a system from scratch. (I guess I'd have to call them to find prices)
Hmm. Only have a few answers based on research and experience with only one system on a diesel...
1 - I am unfamiliar with a resonator on a 7.3. My '00 had no cat and no resonator, only a muffler (which was highly restrictive). My brother's '97 has a cat up front, just behind the downpipe, then a muffler behind that. His cat is short and nearly cylindrical. It looks like a small muffler or resonator.
2 - see 1.
3 - no 'check engine' light should be caused by leaving off the cat. The local police might have something to say about it if your state inspects diesels... People on this forum run straight pipes on these things.
4 - sorry. Don't know. The muffler on my system, a Diamond Eye 5" straight through, is not very loud - but definitely is NOT non-flutter!! I'm looking into alternatives if I decide I don't like it.
5 - a custom built system by a local shop will have a few probems - first, it won't work as well as a kit designed by people with diesel experience - second, as most muffler shops do not use mandrel systems for bending the pipes, you tend to get restrictions at each bend - third, it will cost MUCH more than a kit.
Finally, you don't have to have it welded - just have a shop bolt it together. I bought a kit intending to install it, but due to an injury, couldn't. I paid a shop $80 to install it. Other than turbo flutter, I am very happy with it.
3. I've just heard that cats off would make the light come on on a PSD.
5. If I was just clamping it together I could install it myself I would want it all welded together except for maybe one spot or two. Other than that it sounds like I should buy a kit and just have it installed.
I've read that by adding the 4" downpipe it's like putting headers on a gasser. If that's true I'm very willing to spend the extra dough.
Ceetwarrior, I'm not sure that your local muffler shop will be able to build you a custom 4" system..if they can, that would be really nice.
I don't know any shops around here that can deal with over 3" mandrel piping.
If you go the
custom route, then check out www.airflowonline.com. Some guys on here are piecing together their own system from this site. Airflowonline has a lot of mandrel bends and straightpipe you can use to make your own system. They have 4" and 5".
Check out arninetyes' system too...REAL nice. Good luck!

Except - ceetwarrior specifically doesn't want turbo flutter, and my system has audible turbo flutter - not as bad as a straight pipe, but it is definitely there.
Will the Walker BTM kill the flutter, or have nothing to do with it?
i have the walket btm and i still have the flutter... it doesn't bother me... but... i am going to do a complete system in a year or so... i think that the stock downpipe is the real culprit for causing the flutter... i have heard that from a few people... maybe if someone reading this has a complete 4" or 5" system you can tell us if the flutter went away when you put your exhaust on...
Sorry for the newb question - but what is turbo ... "flutter".
Im running a turbo back 4" magnaflow w/ 5" tip and 3.5" downpipe.
Anyone running the Banks Power Elbow? My buddy took the stock warm up valve butterfly out of his stock excursion ELBOW ... Im thinking of doing that as well here in 72 Degrees Fehrenheit 300 days a year So Cal.
Thoughts and answers appreciated.

Dang Johnny, I thought you got a REAL system, from turbo back. Ok, now that I know you just have a make-believe system, I feel better about still running stock.
Just grab a DP and you're all set!
Was Kwik still getting flutter with the Swisher and 4" turbo back?
I don't think so, think the swishey cured it. (????)
SoCal, get a 4" DP, opens it up more.
Equalize the system with 4" all the way back, the 3.5 is a restriction.
(not much though)
Oh yeah, may want to consider a second mortgage on the house if you get "Hooked on Modics".
(DOHHH, said it again!)
Aryn?
Hey steve250, how could the SWISHER cure the flutter? the swisher goes on the compressor side of the turbo and the flutter comes from the turbine side(exhuast). I have a straight 4" system all the way from the rooter to the tooter and I still have the damn flutter I almost sold my '02 7.3 for 6.0L just because of that ugly sound and i'm still thinking about it. I have now installed a AEROTUBINE muffler and still sounds the same. Maybe if I buy a AURORA 2000 ($2K) the flutter will go away!!!!!!!

i wanted to try the btm... i like it... and the fact that i lowered my egts while towing, but i only spent $150... i like that too... i am going to go with a full system... just need to pay down the card a little first... i was gonna just get a new downpipe, but i think that i would like a 5" system... sound of the btm... a little more like a "big rig"..! i think that the "flutter" was always there, i just didn't hear it with the stock muffler, because it was soo restrictive, just like when you take off you restrictive stock intake and put on the 6637, you start hearing all these sounds your turbo makes... the sounds were always there, you just couldn't hear them before... same with the btm... the flutter was always there, it was just soo muffled that you couldn't hear it...
hey johnny, want a big rig noise? try stacks straight piped....first time i went to my buddy's house, i walked in and his mom goes "that was you!?!?! i thought you were a semi!" buddy finally gets to see them in a week and a few days. if i ever have to put a muffler on my truck, it will probably be a BTM cause its cheap and sounds good from what i hear. (no pun intended).
