Cummins I-6. For all those who hate them, are you hating them because you have owned one and had probelms or because they were put in Dodges, instead of Fords?

Since my needs are light duty, other. A V-6 derived from the Navistar or maybe a big I-4, similar to some Izuzu trucks, but that would be too "GM" for most of those here.

There is a real need to have a smaller diesel in the f150 and ranger, Imo.
I'd prefer the cummins over the durajunk or powerjoke. Seriously, the 7.3 has yet to impress me, it is slow, and feels pretty weak, at least in the 97 and 99 tha I have driven. Did I mention the fact that the 99 is about to be on it's 3rd 7.3 before 100K miles? It's ia 100% stock to boot. Not trying to dis here, but unladen, my 5.4 SD walks circles around it, as I havent hooked up to anything heavy yet. The 2000 Cummins that i drive pulls stronger, and is much faster loaded of not, also has the origional auto trans and engine at over 100K.

I may like the Cummins, but I'll bet my left ******** I can out-pull, out-run, and out-mileage any 5.4 gasser out there in a comparativley weighted vehicle. I don't know what PSD trucks you've been in, but they had to sick... Not to argue, just stating my very honest opinion. I have over 204k on my original motor and tranny, with absolutely no complaints...
As far as the instrinsic low-end torque characteristics of an I-6 vs. a V8, it's a fact. And it'd be an advantage, if we spent the majority of our driving time towing 10K+ lbs under 40 mph... In real-world driving, the V8 from either Ford or GM offers superior power in the mid and upper power band ranges. The very same reasons that drove me to choose a 302 over a 300 12 years ago in a gas truck.
Did I mention I'm not crazy about the sound of an inline-6 chugger either?
Imo, there is no reason for a diesel to go above 3000 rpm in a stock truck. What is gained in rpm is sacraficed in torque off the line and mileage. On the other hand what is lost in lower rpm can be made up in turbo boost and having torque off the line.
I guess I was trying to say that I dislike the narrow powerband and less-than-stellar mid-range response of the Cummins. That motor feels flat-footed in my typical driving routine.

I love to see the power curves of the cummins 600 but it seems hard to find. It could be me, has anyone seen them?
Duramax-stock and with mods 3029-3290. Completely different power curve- linear increase until fairly narrow peak. Note the mod increase- and nature of the curve. Flattens at 2249-3029. Graphic example of how the D-Max benefited the most from the tuning.
The blue line is the torque curve right? seems like the cummins has a very flat and broad torque curve follow by the dmax. the ford seems to peak and drop off pretty quickly.
