Starting problem

I have an '86 F-250 with the 6.9 in it. I'm having a starting problem. I turn the key and wait for the glow plug light to go out. I crank the engine and it starts immediately, runs for maybe 10 seconds, then quits. To get it started again I have to crank it for probably 30 seconds while holding the fuel pedal to the floor. Then once it starts again it runs fine. Sometimes when it wants to die the first time, I can give it a lot of fuel and it will stay running, but it stumbles quite a bit before it clears up. Any ideas what's wrong here???

Hi, I think you have an air leak in the fuel supply pipe. My `87 F250 did the same two times. The first time a tighten on the nuts on the pipe from the fuel lift pump to the filter cured the problem. The second time it turned out to be a leaking water separetor which I bypassed. The problem has not happened again. Any air leak in the fuel line allows the fuel to leak back to the tank so when the engine is started aair enters the injector pump and the engine stops. Have a good look and I think you will find the air leak.
