From what I've read on the EGR from other posts is that it can be disconnected since the valve is by default closed. However, you'd get a check engine light. Reporgraming would be required to stop the computer from reporting the EGR error code and eliminating the "check engine" light. Another option would be to disconnect the bulb for the idiot lights but you'd never know if there were other problems.
Most people want to remove emissions components because they don't understand them, they believe they hamper performance, or they're broken and the owner can't afford to fix them.
99% of the time, it's some combination of the above.
Leave the egr inplace, but block it off. Cut a piece of steel (a bit thicker than tin can) and two gaskets to fit. It might ping a bit after, but the computer is happy. ...Terry

Definitely agree with that, and was going to get to that, but was letting the user tell me his reason first.
My 393 is a detailed engine and my EGR stuff is still in place.
I was getting the check engine light on truck for two years due to my EGR and applied the "tape trick" to eliminate that annoying CEL. Like andym said, I didn't understand the emmision components and I couldn't afford to fix them while I was in school. Thankfully now, I have a good job and can finally address these emissions issuse, and have the time to learn more about them from great resources like this site.
Luckily my problem was a simple as replacing the EGR Valve position sensor. Though my old one still drew voltage and had measurable resistance, it was shot.
So Jeffwecker, do a little research on this site and hopefully you can find the right fix for whatever problems you are having. The EGR is widely discussed on a number of threads. Best of luck.
A Haynes manual will also have instructions on how to fix problems like these. I have a bad signal to the computer for my EGR too and I started diagnosing it with the Haynes manual.
You can apply vacuum to the EGR valve and watch the voltage on the EVP sensor to see if there is a problem...and where the problem lies.
