I've noticed on my truck and several others that there is a gap between the cab and the running boards which looks ugly. Is there a rubber trim or something that goes there? or has anyone had a different idea to fill in that gap.
Yeah, that is called a cab to running board seal. Mid-fifty and a couple of other outfits sell them. They even sell a stainless set-up. Both seem kinda pricey for what you get. I'm thinking about using some industrial conveyor belt scrap. Pretty sturdy stuff that'll keep rocks under the truck instead of ricocheting off your rear fenders.
I just looked at Mid Fifties. No pictures are available, however the regular kit for the pair looks like it goes for $18.00. The stainless set goes for a whooping $450.00. What a difference....
I was looking at that, too. I think those are stainless running boards for $450. They may not carry the stainless seals anymore, the last time I saw them they were going for about $100. I was thinking about making some sort of facia to cover the lip at the bottom of the cab and attaching this belting to the back side. The belt is about 3/8" thick and relatively flexible, made out of reinforced black rubber. I doubt it would tear off from the mounting points. Hope someone else has a better idea. Randy
On my 56 there is a 1/2" vertical flange spot welded to the bottom of the cab. I bought the metal pieces called "corner skirt hangers" and the "rubber skirt" from Midfifty. $12.50 ea for the hangers and $10 pair for the skirts. After painting the hangers I attached the rubber using black plastic "push-on" fasteners I bought at the auto body suppy store. Then I attached the hangers to the 1/2" flange with button head mach screw & nuts.
If you look on page 102 of mid fifty's printed catalog they show all the cab skirt hangers, screws, skirts, etc. The 53-55 trucks used a different set up than the 56 but they show it all.
I hope this helps. Wayne
Sorry, no pix, but I can tell you that the previous posts are right on. Under the bottom lip of the cab on each side is a tacked-on strip that the rubber "pops" into. The rubber is to be positioned on the inside of the edge and the inside of the running board. I have seen people screw them to the outside of that bottom lip and it looks funcky. I used ss bolts to hold the rear corner brackets to the cab and the rubber to the brackets. Good luck, Jag
Are these units a stock item? I've looked at my running boards and cab (or what's left of it in that area) and I don't see any of the items or mounting holes where they would have been.
George, they are stock on 53 - 56. The mount for the rubbers is inside the bottom lip of the cab. So, unless you get underneth, there isn't much to see except the small 7" bracket on each rear corner. Mine was missing one of those too. I see a lot of trucks that are missing the rubber.
I bought the flexible stainless skirt kit from Mid-Fifty. $50. Came with predrilled skirt holes and stainless screws. I held them up to the cab flange and drilled holes for the screws. Had to trim a couple of inches off the back where it wraps around the rear of the cab. Sorry no pic's in my gallery yet.
