New 400

I am in the process of putting a new 400 in place of a worn out 400 thats bored .060 over in a 78 F150 2wd. Im Not all about speed and horsepower but I do want a Rumbling/loud sound. What I have in mind now is a set of headers, and bigger exhaust tubing but I was wondering what you guys recomend for the size of the exhaust? I dont know if glasspacks would do anything for it or not but I want a deep rumble. Thanks

I had good luck with ceramic coated headers, flowmaster 50 series mufflers and 2 1/2" pipes. 2 1/4" would be enough for most applications. It's noticable but not real loud untill you get on it and there is no cabin drone.

Good luck.

where i live, i ran open headers... then straight pipes after the town was complaining about my 6800 rpm on main street with those bad boys, id reccomend at least 2.5 inch and straight pipes with no mufflers... and ull get a hell of a cacle which sounds awsome

Ok well I dont plan on having any mufflers at all just pipe, one of the guys I know around here told me to put 3" pipe all the way with 4" tips, but I hear thats not good for low end?

If you'd go with 2" or 2.25" piping you'd get more poping out of the pipes, but for a deep loud sound I think 2.5" should do the trick pretty nice.

if u go much more than 2.5 i start to lose ur low end torque. i put 2.5 duel with glasspacks ( just so i stay legal) and it sounds pretty good got a pretty deap rumble untill u step on it then every one knows it

I agree don't go any larger than 2.5" pipe, and to keep the legal look go with some short glass packs and they're almost just as loud as straight pipes, but take out some of the harsh noises made from straight pipes.

A friend of mine has a chevy 1500 with no mufflers and 3" pipe with 4" tips and it sounds alright on the lowside but when he gets on it, it sounds like crap, so I think a little muffle with glasspacks should sound pretty good to go along with my headers.

ive used 2inch straight pipe for a while it was pretty loud, plus not alot of people like it when you hit 4500rpm in first and let off goin down the hill with it snappin and popping, been told it made there ears ring but i dont know if that was true

These trucks didn't come with stock dauls. My 77 F-100 302 had 2" single exhaust pipeing, and my 79 Bronco 400 has 2.5" single exhaust piping.
