I am looking for ideas and yes for road travel. When my wife (holding the map upside down) is co-pilot and the veins in my head are sticking out.....you get the idea why I am asking the experts in the room here. My concern is a display big enough to see and safely operate the vehicle.

As I previously posted, the Delorme GPS/Maps work well with a laptop, has more features, and is cheaper than a "stand alone" GPS. The laptop display is much larger than a "stand alone" GPS.

Not sure if anyone has tried the Garmin Plotters that you see in the Cabelos magazines? Might be to big on the dash but those sure like nice. Just another thought.

as far as GPS goes. Garmin is rated top of the line. i work for an ambulance company and we use them at work. they are also 100% portable. they work by suction and are powered by a simple cigarette lighter.

I have the Garmin E-Trex Legend and love it! It's small, light weight, and has the ability to be upgraded from your comp. But that's prob the case with most Garmin products anyway.

[QUOTE=Maxium4x4]I'm going to ask the group

GPS
Portable
Big enough so I can see it. Ya I'm getting old and my fingers are big.....

If I can plug it in between vehicles would be nice, I suppose they make wrist watch devices by now but I can't see without my reading glasses. My current system is out dated......the wife with a map screaming at me to turn left....QUOTE] I just bought a Garmin Streetpilot c330. it works great and is portable just plug and play. it is very accurate. and you can down load upgrades on it ftom your computer. the best thing i like about it is that it tells you that you have a turn comming up 2 miles ahead of time. so you have time to change lanes if needed. well just my 2 cent's worth

I'll second the recommendations for the Garmin 2610. I've used this one for over a year in my truck, car and on my Honda Goldwing motorcycle. Stayed away from he 2620 as it has an internal hard drive which is not recommended for motorcycle use -- too much vibration. Plus, I like the ability to create routes on my computer and then download the routes to the GPS. The 2610 suites me fine and I'm 100% satisfied with this unit. Is it the best? Don't know as each person has their own needs, but for me I wouldn't trade it.

My 2 cents

I recently went to Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org/), selected my city (Sacramento) and found a cheaper laptop (IBM A22p). The laptop is a P3 1Ghz processor (not blazing fast, but fast enough), and came with a CD/DVD reader and port replicator for $440. Add the DeLorme GPS software and USB GPS receiver for another $100 and you've got a crazy GPS system. As an additional perk, you can use the "carputer" software you can find from mp3car.com (http://www.mp3car.com/) and you've got a nice system. Most people don't want a laptop sitting on the console, so you can get a touchscreen add on for $199 up for a nice finished install, or you can get a nice laptop mount like most police interceptors have for about $50. Either way, you've got a GREAT gps system for way cheaper than the best system you can find out of the box. I'm in the process of getting an 8" or larger touch screen to mount onto the dash as a permanent mount, and getting a 2nd port replicator to tie into a power sequencer so the laptop will power up and shut down with the ignition.

When it's all said and done, the wife can put down the map and watch a DVD on one screen while I get to see the GPS and vehicle diagnostics on the dash screen and everyone's happy.
