GPS
Portable
Big enough so I can see it. Ya I'm getting old and my fingers are big.....
If I can plug it in between vehicles would be nice, I suppose they make wrist watch devices by now but I can't see without my reading glasses. My current system is out dated......the wife with a map screaming at me to turn left....
I have not went window shopping yet. Figured I would throw it to the masses here. Could be I posted in the wrong forum. GPS did not fit under audio or suspension so I tried after-market..... or could it be.....maps are better...
I use garmens gps60C and absolutly love it, but i use it alot for snowmobiling, its very tough and the display is very big for its size, turn by turn and it does all kinds of stuff i never use!
I have an old Garmin III+ and it still works great. Has the built in map feature with uploadable topo maps. I have a portable antenna that I have sitting on a old ski pole. When I am out snowmaching (snowmobiling for those down south) or riding the four wheeler I just throw the unit in my pocket and have the pole sticking out of the top of my backpack. The down side is that it is 5 years old so it really does not have the memory of the newer ones when it comes to downloading maps. Looks like the majority of us have Garmin.
Also check out the different version of computer software for your GPS. Delorme, TopoUSA, FUGAWI to name a few. It is nice to upload your trip while sitting on the computer and go from there.
I use the delorme mapping software on my laptop in the truck i have a garmin e-trex vista that plugs into the laptop via a serial cable.
the handy part about this setup is the delorme software talks to you and you can use voice commands to talk back ... i especially like the ZOOM MAP command since i also have bad eyesight these days
i can also upload data from the laptop into my garmin and go portable on dual sport motorcycle rides.
my cheap cobra sucked, maybe due to the trees and mountains. It couldn't locate you in the same spot twice, even if you didn't move, errors up to a half mile, so we sent it back.

My Garmin Streetpilot is sitting on a shelf gathering dust since I bought a Vcom nav system.
I talk to it and it talks to me. No screen, no buttons. Completely portable from vehicle to another.

It is like having an extra wife to tell you where you are going, with out all the snide comments.
Yep for now. Probley will be able to get an personality chip down the road and the darn thing will start talking back, if you know what I mean. Pretty nice unit for a vehicle but I would be hesitant about taking it out in the field. Doesnt look too weather tight. But that does depend on were you live.
Another suggestion, if you are going off the beaten path. Take a map reading course. Never fails we get a rescue call for a lost hiker due to "Mechanical Breakdown/batteries". Some times the basics are really what is needed. If you are using it for road travel just ignor the above.
