I'm rebuilding an old Ford tractor with a 1951 226 flathead 6 on it. After tearing it apart, I realized that it'll take somewhere around $1500 to make it run properly again. Does anyone know where I can find one of these engines in running condition? I understand that a batery might be dead or the carb might need cleaned out, but it would be great to be able to find one of these old engines to just drop in instead of rebuild. I'm not using this tractor for show, just for regular around the house duty, so I dont want to spent that much to rebuild it.
Also, does anyone know if the block from the 226 matches up with any other straight 6 blocks? Some pieces from the tractor are mounted onto the block (transmision and with the front frame supports), so I want to know if I can widen my search from just the 1949-1951 engines.
Post an item wanted request in the classifieds section on FTE. There is a lot of traffic there and you'll have access to more folks than those of us that visit this forum.
As far as a close match, the 254 is probably the closest as far as size and mounting brackets. I believe it used the same block as the 226 and was bored out to get the extra cubic inches (3.300" vs. 3.500" diameter bore).
Do you know what kit was used to modify your tractor?
There have been several made over the years. It would help in figuring out what other blocks will work.
Brian, posting in the classifieds on this site as George mentioned is a good start. When looking for a good flathead V8 block, I also posted a classified in three local newspapers, which got me several responses (although most wanted me to buy the entire vehicle they were in). But my best luck came when my engine shop guy just happenend to know someone dabbling in flatheads and hooked us up, turned out he was just 6 miles away. So if you have a local machine/engine shop, ask around there and see if they have any leads too. Worked well for me.
Too bad that you're in Ohio, because I have two good 239 V8 flatties that I want to sell. One is a running V8 from a '51 and the other is a non-running (because the head is off) 239 V8 Mercury flattie.
