well I dont wheel hardcore, I jsut turned 18 so Ive only had my licence a little while. But if you wheel "hardcore" wouldnt you want some clearence so you could articulate a little without smashing your fenders everytime. takea look at a truck with 33s stock and 33s with a 4inch lift and tellme that the lifted one doesnt look better.

I have 35"s with NO lift right now on my shortbox. It's not prefered since I rub quite a bit, but when it comes down to it, i'd hack the heck outta my fenders LONG before I put any body lift in there. The fact is I'm planning on lifting it 6 inches soon, and I'm afraid the 35"s are gonna look too dinky with that much lift. You gotta fill the fenders. That's why you can have a chebby cruising around with 9" total lift and 35" tires still look big on it.
