I just bought a 76 f100 300ci.. I bought from a man I work with.. I had been wanting a project truck for a while and This one has Very good body and interior is not too shabby.. When I purchased truck he told me that he thought a rod was going out.. When he started it up It sounded like main rear bearing knocking.. I figured oh well either way. What is interesting about truck is not what is wrong with engine but how it got that way.. I went to work that night and asked a few questions.. 1. How many years had he ran without a filter on the carb.. He replied at least 5.. hmm.. ok.. 2. When was last time he changed the oil.. He said well never really changed it.. just added a quart now and then.. Yikes..Anyway the Rods are not knocking.. the rings have some serious blow by tho and the sludge I got out of the oil pan was Impresive..And the main rear is knocking till it builds up oil pressure..
I at least had to Give the guy a hard time.. even tho I was still happy with purchase.. He bought a mazda in place of truck I bought.. I told him.. Hey you better change the oil at least in this one.. It's not going to Last near as long as that ford!
Another sad part of this tale is. He told me when he bought the truck.. The folks told him it had 15k on it.. It was a farm truck and the Farmer had died.. And the wife parked it in barn.. And a few years after that Wife dies and Truck is sold in auction. Odd thing is the Guys family who truck belonged to also works in same place..The OD now shows 55k. Feller told me yeah I think it had 115k instead of just 15k.. He kinda got annoyed with me when I told him that Driving with no Filter and not changing oil will make any engine run like it has 200k on it.. Funny that it has had the same oil filter on it for last 5 years also.. Took it off and it was nothing but sludge coming out. I am glad to have a decent truck to work with but I almost wanted to beat a man down for that..Told him that sounded like something my wife would do :7 No offense to the ladies out there.
