I've determined my tranny is a C6, from one of the tech articles on this site (nice!). I've dropped the pan to change the fluid and the darn thing looks like a new transmission. Nothing in the pan, very clean. Is there a screen or a filter under the inner cover? Looks like a screen. Should I diassemble and make sure it's clean? Recommended transmission fluid?
The reason I decided to change the fluid is, for one the truck is idle while waiting on a new/replacement gas tank to be arrive, and because sometimes when I shift it in reverse or drive it doesn't engage unless I rev the engine a little bit. Heard on here that fluid maintenance can sometimes help, and it's an easy test.
Hi, the C-6 only uses a screen for a filter. I wouldn't bother changing it if it's clean. You could throw a magnet in the pan. When I installed a deep sump pan it came with a conversion kit that has a real filter in it. Turbo400 type I think. After changing the fluid I would make sure the linkage is adjusted properly.
Yep, just plain metal mesh screens are what I've found on my C6 Trans filters. Though you will see a difference in the mesh hole sizes between different brands. (What's up with that??) The magnets are great little peace of mind devices. I was paranoid about putting one in the pan, in case it ever dislodged and got stuck up in any critical parts. (Magnets do loose their magnetism with prolonged exposure to hi temps.) I opted to put one of the "rare earth" magnets on the outside bottom of the pan. It's worked great for keeping any metal debris in the one corner of my pan when changing the fluids.
