Found on road dead..

My truck is making that saying true to any bypassers on the interstate, tonight..

Heading home last night, my truck ('95 F150/5 speed/Standard) decided it was time to go into sputters and humor me with short repetitious stalling; While going to disengage my clutch, I found that there was absolutely no pressure nor did my clutch pedal respond back to it's proper position when I removed my foot - just hugged the floor. There was also a nice burnt rubber smell present accompanying the smoke when I came to a complete stop.

Without my foot on the brake, the truck will start while in first however, while running, there is a grinding sound, so at 2 am and being completely useless, I just drove clear of the interstate and walked to the rest area. Also, It takes a good effort to put in and out of gears, while the truck is off. (With the grinding, I didn't try while it ran.)

Now, i'm assuming with the smoke, smell and clutch pedal reactions, that I have a faulty clutch however, no idea to which part. A faulty Tranny also came to mind but I was reassured by a mechanic over the phone that it wasn't; And, by another, that it was - So...

Basically, what do you guys propose?

Also, Anyone in Fl. (I-75 area) willing to give a fella a tow? heh..
Thanks in advance.

Slide the tranny back and take a look. My guess is the slave cylinder. The burning you smell is probably from the clutch disc covered in hydraulic fluid.

Sounds a lot like mine did when the tranny died. The notorious rubber plugs leaked out the fluid and the front bearing ate itself. The overheat melted the slave cylinder too.

The Grinding sound is probably your worst symptom. Slipping clutches don't make grinding noise. I guess the throwout bearing could have came apart and that could be grinding, or other parts maybe from the slave cylinder in there getting chewed. If you are working on it yourself, I would drop the tranny and get a look at the clutch first, there is a good posibility that all your trouble will be located there. However be prepared for worse.
