I'm looking for performance parts and tips for my '91 Escort w/1.9L. All I can find are fart cans and cheesy intake kits. I'm mostly looking at getting a better cam and then maybe a chip if one's available. I'd also be interested in hearing any tips on bigger throttle bodys and better intake manifolds. Also, how difficult would it be to swap in a 1.8 gt engine? Thanks!!!
Escort Performance? That's kinda the oxymoron of the year. It can be done, but you will probably see tons of improvements just by doing maintenance. The biggest item would have to be the Intake Charge Temp Sensor in the tb housing. This will wake the car up quite a bit. Also, if it is an auto, put a tranny cooler on it, and it will start really banging shifts.
The 1.8 should swap in without too much hassle, since they came in 91 up Escort GTs. You should probbaly get the attached 5 speed if possible. Also look at the 4 wheel discs if you find a donor car. I had a 91, and that 1.8 DOHC Mazda motor is a very good motor. It was still running like a top at 108,000 miles, only needed a timing belt. The car always got 25 MPG no matter what speed I drove. Made it from panama City Beach Florida to San Marcos Texas in 10 hours wth 3 people in it and the AC running. Thats 930 miles, and we still got 25 MPG.
There are Turbo kits for that motor that will get well over 200 HP. I know we ran some 5.0 Mustangs in our day, and they were very impressed. red Line is at 7000RPM, it make sgood power from 3000 up. I miss that car, lots of good times in that one.
