I just popped a bag in my LLS, so in my fine fashion, I just ordered the kit based on the recommendations of some of you. Now, I'm gonna ask some questions.
Have any of you towed heavy loads with this system. I tow a 26 foot travel trailer, weighing 6750 lbs and my gross weight is 12,300. The truck is rated for 8,000 lbs trailer and 13,500 GCWR.
Please, share your thoughts. I haven't installed it yet.
Ok, I just finished intalling the springs. The expy sits a little taller, but not much. The ride is slightly firmer, but I think they will settle in nicely. It's a more stable feel, with less side to side wallow. Installation took me 2 1/2 hours, with a dinner break. It was really easy. I'll post in a week and a half after my vacation to update how it towed the trailer.
I see, by the fact there were no responses, this is NOT a hot topic. Anyway, if it helps anyone considering this conversion, I just towed a trailer weighing approximately 7,000 lbs with a GCW of 13,200 (GCWR on my 98 5.4 2wd is 13,500) with the strutmasters srpings and it was GREAT. I'm gonna sell the truck, though for a used Excursion. Wife wants a bigger trailer! Hope this helps someone in the future.
Photojoe--- My springs arrive tomorrow!!! I've read here that changing the shocks in front is a real pain, any tips for that? The rear looks fun as I've been swapping coils on jeeps for years so it should be pretty easy. Thanks.
Sorry, mine is a 2wd. Back went great, didn't have to do the front. I did the rear shocks at the same time. A lot easier with no springs in the way. Good luck. You're going to LOVE it.
Does it sit higher than it did when it was running before? Mine goes up almost an inch after I start it, then another inch when I put it in 4WL. I was thinking about doing a swap, but I want it to atleast be as high as it is now in 4WL. Maybe a spring spacer? How much did you pay for the kit?
I have a 97. I had 4wd with 4 corner LLS. The rear is ok but I am not happy with the front the shock choice to replace the front air shocks with regular shocks is awful. I used KYB GR-2 but I think now I have to crank up the torsion bars a bit. It sits too low in the front and is a little too bouncy for me. I may have to go with the strutmasters front shock kit, very exspensive though.
I"m done with my conversion too. Going to have to crank the front end up an inch to level it out but that's fine. I think the ride's ok, wife likes it. We are going to tow with it this weekend, we'll see how it does.
Mine sits about an inch higher in the back, identical in the front. I asked Strutmasters about towing and they said that the spring kit is rated at the GAWR of stock or higher so towing should not be a problem. I'm not comfortable towing with it only for the fact I'm within 200lbs of GCWR of 13,500 lbs. A new tow vehicle is in my future, and this becomes the daily driver. As far as front shocks on 4wd, I've read in other posts about the spring conversion that old bronco specs are what you're looking for. I don't have 4wd, so don't know first hand. Search for Strutmasters and you'll find it. Good luck all.
