Intake or Airbox Mods?

I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 5 spd V6. I already have a Flowmaster 70 Exhaust and am looking to open up the front end (amount of air it takes in).

With the airbox design on these trucks, the airbox is already inducted away from the engine (allowing it to get cooler air) so I'm having a hard time seeing the advantage of paying for 100's for a Cold AirIntake when it's inducted stock. I've read that the airbox hole is only 1.5" wide (small), so what is the best route?

Am I better off adding more holes to the bottom of the airbox? Replacing just the airbox with a cone filter ? Or (and I can't see the advantage) starting from scratch with a Cold AirIntake system?

Thanks
Jerets

If you open up the air box there a small tub/horn there. Take it out, the hole will be around 3". You will need to take the air box out of the truck to get the horn out. Undo the intake air line and lift up (HARD) on the air box it just snaps in and out. THAT's NOT THE BEEP BEEP KIND OF HORN.

Sounds like an interesting idea.

Does the air box really just lift out? I attempted this and pulled up on it as hard as I dared. I was afraid of breaking something. I see what you are talking about though. Good idea if I can get the airbox out. I have a 97 with SOHC btw.

I put in a K & N Cone Filter in my 95 Exlplorer 4.0 with 5-speed, and you can feel more power now.

There could be a number of reasons.....255/70/16 tires, 4.10 gears....when I put my K&N panel filter in I saw no improvement whatsoever. I'm lookin' to try something else....cutting open the airbox is my next mod.

The OEM air box is designed to be a cold air intake. By putting holes in the air box, all you will do is pull in hot under-hood air, defeating the purpose of a cold air intake. The OEM intake is designed to provide all the air the engine
can pull.

To back this theory up, check out this truely independent dyno test of the airbox mod:

Unhappy

My dad and I just took apart my airbox to see what's involved in completing this mod. We couldn't get the box out and the horn didn't seem like it was going to come out without a major fight. The box is attached to something else at the base with wires attached to it. If we can get a spare box to experiment on then maybe we'll look further at this mod.

I'm disappointed because this seemed like an easy mod for some benefit.

**Checked out the link....very interesting.

ok....so how/why is an aftermarket cold air intake system better than stock?

The airbox is mounted into some rubber gromets in the body. Check out the URL I posted, it's not worth the effort, there is no improvement. All it does is
make more noise.

I've checked out the link and read further his info on his K&N filter experiment. Wish I'd know this before I spent the $90 for the K&N panel filter.

I'm no mechanic and what I read wasn't rocket science....there it was in black and white. The test was obviously legitimate and the results valid.

Still disappointed though.....I could use a few more MPG's with my $0 budget. If I could afford a CAI, Exhaust, Chip and programmer I'd go for it.
