You obviously have some automotive knowledge judging by the stable of cars that you own and not easily swayed by marketing and hype. From your experience can you recommend any methods to obtain some free MPG's? I keep my tires properly inflated, use synthetic oil, conservative driving style etc.

Thank you for your kind words! I try to look at things logically, and apply simple principles of physics. I'm an electrical engineer by trade, I've worked
for IBM for almost 34 years now, most of that time in the semiconductor field.
Probably my main goal in these forums is trying to convince young people not to throw their money away on worthless mods! Most of these youngsters don't have the technical savy to recognize these mods are rip-offs, and most
don't have the money to be blowing on them. I just hate to see these young people loose their money!!!
Bingo, you are right on for better MPG! "conservative driving style"! Driving habits will affect MPG more than anything else!!!
I'm spending at least $50 a fill up and I can't afford to waste any of it. I love my cruise control and where I live I can use it a lot.
I saw in your profile you had an engineering background. You're the type of person I'm going to listen too.....over a cleverly packaged item with claims of better performance.
I see several of you are really gettin' into "passionate" discussion in the Miracles Do Happen thread.
.......can you recommend any methods to obtain some free MPG's?.........
Warning: controversial subject (not 4 children)
If you want to experiment, try acetone as a gas additive. I have a thread on the subject that got moved to the alternative fuels forum. I've tried it; I can't draw a positive conclusion that it works. If you do a few google searches, you will find others that feel different, some MUCH different. Topping off the gas tank and the weather are just a few of the variables that are causing problems in determining the effectiveness (or lack thereoff). I'm not sure I've tried the best acetone either; I got it from Lowes. Next time it will be in a package that clearly states 100% pure acetone. A scangauge would be nice to have onboard too, then devise and implement a sound test. There's more but this should be enough to offer food for thought.
*Do NOT spill acetone on your paint.

I'd love to see a pic of your Volve 1800E. They're nice cars.
The only thing I have done to my Ranger is put Bilstein shocks on it, and a Gibson stainless SS cat-back on it.
I don't have any pictures of my 1800E, but here is a URL with a discription, and pictures of one just like mine, except the color. Mine is gold, and I have had it since August 1975:
Nice car! Were any of them automatics? I bet it would be a blast to cruise around in. I want one....:-)
Ok now, you and I both agree that it's more important to mod a vehicle based on function than testonerone. I can see where the shocks would make the ride more confortable but I'm curious about the exhaust...how does it help? Is there something beyond the obvious choices....throttle response....sound....gas mileage....more hp?

Yes, I believe they offered automatics in some of the 1800E's.1972 was the last year for the 1800E, in 1972, and 1973, they made a 1800ES, a hatch-back version of the 1800E.
Another advantage of the stainless exhaust is longevity.
When I first read your post I thought "he's against this kind of mod so why did he do it?" I didn't think of that. I think my muffler might be original but it's showing no signs of wear so I won't be replacing it with a stainless anytime soon.
The 1800ES kind of looked like a station wagon didn't it? I don't know if you get the FineLivingTV channel but one of their programs had a segment on the P1800's and I remember seeing a P1800ES....it was a sporty lookin' ride...:-)
