Today I was trying to pull a rather large truck out of a ditch when I noticed that only 3 of my 4 wheels were spinning. I had the truck in 4WD low but my front drivers side wheel was not spinning with the rest of them. Is something wrong with my truck or is this normal?
I'm almost positive that these trucks did not come from the factory with a limited slip front differential. Yes...your truck is perfectly normal. My truck has every last bit of off-roading options available from the factory and it is still only a "3 wheel drive".
Kind of deceiving isn't it? I'm new to the 4 wheel drive market and I found out my 86 F-150 has open diffs front and rear. So I just have 2 wheel drive...one front..one back. In 4 wheel drive that is.
I must admit though that it went through a pretty good mud-hole with no problems.
Definitely open front diffs from the factory. My Expy has open diffs front and rear, never been a problem, actually helpful in certain situations where power fed to both wheels on the same axle at the same time could have caused a $ideway$ $lide into $omething expen$ive.
OK, i guess that is kind of deceiving but I am glad that nothing is wrong with my truck. Thanks for answering my question and helping me to sleep better, not thinking about another thing I have to spend money on...
i am kinda in a similar situation... today i pulled one of my friends out of a seriously deep mudhole (up past his frame). and i used 4x4 low, but that wasn't what i was worried about i pulled him out just fine. i am kind of concerned about my 4x4 high... sometimes when i use it just as i'm getting stuck somewhere and try to turn it on, it doesn't do much good, but 4x4 low works great trying to get out of somewhere when i'm stuck. i'm wondering if 4x4 high isn't giving me as much power to the front wheels as it should be. anybody else have this problem?

This is normal for 4high. It feels like your bogged down because now your splitting the power between both axles and getting twice as much traction. This is where 4-low comes into play by providing another gear reduction in your drivetrain to give you more torque, but at the cost of wheel speed.
Sounds good, mine did not have much power when I put it in to Four high either, had to drop it to 4 low just to move up a hill. I compare this to my previous 4X4s rice burners and they would clime a tree in 4 high, must have been closed front diffs. any way the Ford F150 works fine and it's big enough for what I need to do where the rice burners were to small.
