Just got done installing the SCMT on new 05 ford dsl with auto. Tuned to economy, put my foot in it, tires barked, off I went in a cloud of black smoke. Then tuned to tow safe, put my foot in it, didn't bark tires and off I went in cloud of black smoke. Should I be seeing black smoke in tow safe with fast take offs. Not wanting a hot rod, but just increased fuel efficiency and a little more power to pass safely when towing. Just concerned about the smoke.
Its low boost overfueling, normal for a diesel from takeoff, if it continues once the turbo is spooled up with no load check into it, otherwise enjoy blowing soot on the ricer next to you.
I rarely see smoke with my SCMT regardless of the installed tune mode. The exception was up at altitude when towing on my last trip. There I'd get a puff of smoke when pulling away from stop lights.
Normally when driving around unloaded I don't see smoke. That is probably because I rarely ever just punch the throttle to the floor. I feed in throttle as fast as the truck will take it and offer good throttle response.
This comes from growing up riding 2-stroke dirt bikes. You'd never just whack the throttle open or you risk loading up the motor. That habit has I think served me well - and saved fuel and tires over the years too
If I ever need to get away from a light quickly, I do a light power brake before the light changes. That builds boost for a good launch and gets rid of the turbo lag, and doesn't seem to smoke either.
I blow black smoke with my Preditor on 65 and 100HP mode. I never run it on 45HP so it may blow smoke with the mode also. I love smoking the car next to me especially if its a ricer.
