Heya. I have 76 f100 with the 300i. While I do like the inlines, I have several choices open to me atm.. Have 400 without trans. complete motor out of 72ltd that I can purchase for about $400.. motor has about 70k on it.. Also have 460 with trans and complete motor I can pick up for very reasonable price. All three of these motors would need rebuild.. The c4 trans on truck also needs to be rebuilt. I want more performance from the inline, and I know that that can get a bit costly for a six.. The 460 has lil over 100k on it. The 300 has been abused very badly. Anyone have any info that might make me choose one over the other?
If it is going to be your play truck then I would go with the 460cid. The logic behind this is that you can never have to much power, but you sure can have to little. Because it is your play truck I doubt that you are worried about gas mileage (though the difference between mileage in a 400 and 460 is normally not worth noting). The cost of a rebuild might be a little more on the 460 but pound for pound you get that much more out of it in terms of bang for the buck. The only reason I rebuilt my 351M into a 406 was that there were no 460s around that I could get a hold of.
