Hiball has it rite, I checked the ford shop manual,
It says that you really don't need to do it at all their should be enough residual magnetism for it to start on it's own.

To poarize a rebuilt generator mounted on the vehicle , disconnect the field wire and the battery wire from the regulator and momentary connect the two wires together, engine not running.
57Ford..thanks, I know I'm getting senile, but thats the way I have done it since 1964..LOL, I did a little research to see if I'm loosing it.....regulators with external ground feilds go ARM to BAT, regulators with internal ground feilds go FEILD to BAT..all FORD regulators 55-64 are internal..so it FEILD to BAT..and yes your right, it should be done before starting the engine
