I was told by numeruous people that the 390 punched 40 over is not the way to go as far as mud bogging. this moter i was told will not stand up to high rpms and will break, everybody tells me to go 400 big block or 460, any suggestions, im trying to make up my mind
the 390, 400, 460 all have longs strokes made for low end torque. Consequently, they dont like to be revved high. Thats why they call them lazy motors. They dont have to do much, to get alot done. What about a small block? with a blower? nitros? who knows, the skies the limit. But a high revving engines usually do better with shorter strokes.
Swampy, someone is giving you bad information- the 390 is a fine engine and can be built to do anything you ask of it. jump over to the FE area and we can discuss how to do it. DF
if you're looking for a engine to rev high. the FE family would be the place to look. the 390 belongs to the FE family. the crankshaft is completely inside the block unlike every other ford motor except the new modular engines(wonder where they got that idea?). the mains a very strong. dont believe everything people tell you about long the stroke of 390. its not that long. the 400 has the longest stroke of any pushrod ford v8. 390's are awsome motors
hey thanx everybody for the input, i have decided to keep the 390 in and it makes total sense of why the 390 is a strong moter, thanx again for all of your input,
