5-speed manual

Looking for opinions on the quality/durability of the close ratio 5-speed manual tranny used with the diesel engines. Wondering if it would be a good fit for use behind a 351 in a full size bronco 4x4.

I don't think that would be a very easy swap. The bellhousing on the ZF-5 and ZF-6 is part of the casting, and I'm pretty sure that the 5.7 and the 7.3 do not have the same bolt pattern.

LOL, that reminds of "The Thing" from Fantastic Four the movie when he's trying to dial his home phone number on a payphone. Hits like ten numbers at a time. Haha.

Thanks for the reply. Found someone that has a 5-speed and transfer case out of a '90 F-350 diesel. Think I will go take a look and get some measurements and then find an F-250 5.8 5-speed and compare.

durability, i really doubt you can build a windsor to hurt it that is going in a bronco, if it bolts up(doubt it) go for it.

Here's the deal:

Current set up: '96 Bronco 4x4 5.8L E4OD
Found: 5-speed manual and transfer case out of a '90 F350 7.3L diesel

Info I have is from a '94 Ford Truck Source Book that shows the F250/350HD has a 5-speed manual wide ratio behind either a 5.8L or a 7.5L and a close ration 5-speed manual or E4OD auto behind the 7.3L diesel.

I'm guessing both 5-speeds are the same case(housing) with different gearing and therefore should bolt up with the right bell housing.

Any help confirming this would be appreciated. By the way how much would a used tranny and transfer case be worth?

the bolt pattern diesel to gas is different. And as such, the case on the ZF and bellhousing are one piece, so that tranny is no good for you, you need to find one out of a 5.8L truck.

Your right. Talked to a local tranny shop and they said the same thing. Looks like my choice is either the wide ratio from a 5.8L F-250 or the cheessy mazda 5-speed used in the F-150's.

Thanks for your help.
