I also read somewhere about mixing Lemon oil and Mint in Rubbing Alcohol, and putting it in a sprayer, and then spraying yourself with it.
Another I read about is to take several dryer fabric softener sheets and string them through your belt loops.(?) Okaaayy...
Some natural oils that repel insects are: Lavender Oil (The girls will love you!), Lemon Oil, Lemon Grass Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, and Pine oil. These are the safe ones.
Not-so-safe are: Pennyroyal Oil and Citronella oil. (I think I'd pass on these two, just to be on the safe side.)
We usually go to either the Pit River (near powerhouse #2), Upper McCloud River, McCloud River Preserve (Ah-Di-Na campground), Lost Creek between Lassen and Burney Falls and Fall River.
Good area. As a kid I lived on the other side of Redding, in a little town called French Gulch. Whiskeytown Lake, Clear Creek, Trinity Lake, that used to be my home stomping grounds although I spent a lot of time with my grandparents taking trips out to where you're going. My grandfather was born up in Etna, in Siskiyou county. Now THERE'S some nice, rugged scenic country, well worth the extra couple hours it would take you to get up there. Not crowded yet, still pretty undiscovered country. Sawyer's Bar, Forks of Salmon...stay in Idlewild campground, known to the locals as Finley Camp. Used to be my great-uncle's mining claim.
Or, closer to home, there's Lake county...(now where have I heard that name before?)
I don't fish myself, but my bro-in-law knows all the local hot spots.
Anyway, sounds like a good time wherever you end up. -TD
I like Bug Juice from REI. It is 99% pure DEET so not for kids. It deosn't irritate my skin, but it does feel a bit greasy and it will dissolve some plastics.
I would say it works about 90% against mosquitos, but it does seem to need to be reapplied fairly often. It is only about $4 a bottle and it goes a long way.
Problem with most repellants is that if there is a part of your body not protected, the bugs still seem to find it. For example I rarely put Deet on my back and my upper thighs, crotch or belly. My arms, legs and neck are covered so the bugs rarely try there. But, they do occasionally go thru my clothing to get the areas I did not put DEET on.
Supposedly Deet is supposed to confuse the bugs smell sensors so they can't find you, but seems to me it must be very short range.
Salt & vinegar chips will do it to a degree after awhile. If you eat enough of them over time, a little bit of the vinegar will start to sweat out, and the mosquitos will leave you alone a little better...doesn't do a thing for mayflies though.
