I'm looking for a 4wd suv to share with my son. I've located a 2000 Explorer with the V8 and AWD, with 87,000 miles for a reasonable price. I've also located a 2000 Expedtion with the 4.6 and about 74,000 miles for $2000 more. The Expy has a switch on the dash with 3 positions: A4WD, 4WD Hi and 4WD Lo. Both vehicles have good Carfax's and look well cared for.
Originally I was looking for an Explorer but some on this forum have questioned my sanity.
Questions:
1 Can anyone offer an opinion on which vehicle is like;y to give me less trouble? I plan to keep the vehicle for ar least 5 years and put 50,000 miles on it.
2 Can anyone offer their experience as to the real world gas mileage I can expect from either of these vehicles?
3 Anything I should be on the lookout for while examining these vehicles?
4 What is the deal with the 4WD set up in the Expy? I understand that the Explorer is in 4WD mode all the time, but is the same true with the Expy?
I'm thinking if the Expy has a true 2WD/4WD set up, the real world mileage between the two vehicles might not be that different.
Any experience, advice or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Reason: incomplete
the expedition is a better all around truck. much better off road and way more space inside. the expy has a all wheel drive feature and is also on the fly 4x4
I've got the V-8 Explorer and I really like it. I bought it to tow my boat around and it does a great job (better than my F250 diesel). It gets around 13.5 mpg towing, but so far not much better solo. Around town driving seems to really suck the gas, but everyone claims they can get almost 20 on the hi-way.
What do you want to do with the truck? We didn't want a big SUV that was going to be harder to park. Seems the spaces just keep getting smaller and smaller. I thought about the Expedition, figured it would be better for towing. Between the cheaper price and the wife not wanting the bigger rig, there was really only one choice.

I totally disagree. In almost every off road situation (except sand) a smaller, shorter wheelsbase truck is better.
In reality neither is built for hardcore off road use since 99% of owners dont take them off road. The primary difference is interior space. However that whole tire issue thing that pre 02 explorers had would make me go with the expedition.
I have an 05 explorer 4x4 with the 4.6 and 3:73 gears and I have to say it is really a great truck, Ive pulled 5000lbs with it and the drive train and engine combo feels strong. I have a friend who has a 2000 expedition with the 4.6 and I hate to say it, but it's a dog, to much vehicle for the motor. I believe Ford now only offers the expy with the 5.4, in my opinion the 4.6 just isn't enough engine for that size truck. good luck.
I guess I would use these questions to gauge an answer with:
1) How much room do you need inside the vehicle? Are you going to be carrying a lot of stuff?
2) What does your insurance quote for both vehicles?
3) How good of a driver is your son (no offense meant)? The Expedition is larger and be more complicated to drive (parking, etc).
4) If you are only keeping it 5 years, which will bring you the better resale at the time of sale? Will the Expedition bring enough to warrant the extra $2,000?
I personally would look at these questions more than worrying about what problems could arrise. If you have checked over both vehicles and they are comparable in shape and wear/tear, you could have just as good or bad luck with either one (or any other vehicle for that matter). As 'problems' go, both have had their fair shake at some issues, but nothing large enough to say 'buy this one over that one'. The sensible questions above will make more of a difference than the problems.
I was happy with my 97 Explorer XLT AWD V8. I got 14-15MPG around town, dropped to 13MPG in snow storms. I could squeak out 19-20MPG on highway trips.
My current SUV is a 2005 EB Explorer 4x4 4.0L w/tow. Really happy with it, 16-17MPG around town.
