Talking Exploder or Expedition

I'm in the market for a 4WD SUV to share with my son. I've found a 2000 V8 AWD Explorer XLT with a little less than 90,000 miles on it for a reasonable price . I've also found a 2000 Expedition with the 4.6 with 74,000 miles on it for $2,000 more. The Expedition has a switch on the dash that has 3 positions: A4WD, 4WD Hi, and 4 WD Lo. Both vehicles have good Carfax's and look like they've been well cared for.

Originally I was looking for an Explorer, but several people on the Explorer forum have questioned my sanity.

Questions:

1 Can anyone offer an opinion as to which vehicle is likely to give me less trouble? I expect to keep this vehicle for at least 5 years and put 50,000 miles on it?

2 Anyone have any real world experience with the gas mileage that either of these vehicles will give me?

3 Anything I should look out for when looking at these vehicles that might give me a hint of problems?

4 What is the deal with the 4 wd set up in the Expedition? The Explorer has no switch and I understand that the 4WD system is engaged all the time. Is the Expedition set up the same? If the Expedition set up is a true 2WD/4WD set up, I'm thinking the real world mileage might not be that much different between the 2. Any thoughts?

Any info or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Well they both use the same engine but the Explorer is less weight. Not a hard decision if you are choosing for gas mileage.

You got maintenance records or anything on 'em? If not, I personally tend to favor vehicles with less miles.

The Expedition of that vintage is NOT a true 2wd set up.

there are tons of threads on expy gas mileage (explorer too, i assume) if you do a search you'll find 'em. it seems to range anywhere from 10-18 depending on the driver and driving. i get 11-13 mainly city, but i've got the 5.4L engine.

The EXPLORER does have better gas milage BY FAR, if thats your goal !! It although DOES NOT offer the ride quality of the EXPEDITION !! You really CANNOT compare the 2 trucks togeather !! Although they both come from the same family of FORD products they totally differant !!
