Is this part really necessary? FoMoCo part...

I just replaced my Holley 1904 carb with a new(reman) one on my 1961 F600 and wonder if the item mounted between the carb and intake manifold is necessary for engine operation?? This part has a butterfly valve similar to what a carb has and has a line hooked up between this item and the carb.

What is this part for?

The number on the plate reads:

FoMoCo
Engine Model EBR
Range 1800-3000 RPM N.L.
Cote 12450-C
KS-V5S-575

Thanks

Thanks Bill...but do you think it is necessary? If so, do you have a picture of the correct setup with the lines going to/from it to the carb? Over the years, past owners do some strange mods.

I am up at this hour as I work a night shift. Off at 7:30 am.

It's necessary if you want to govern the engine RPM's. Sorry, I have no shop manual...where it would show/explain the setup.

And, since I'm using the Ford Truck Parts Catalog on microfiche, cannot scan/post parts catalog pics.

I've been retired since 1997, so my hours are flexible. Since "She, who must be obeyed" is oughtta town, while the cat's away, the mice will play.

Looking in the shop manual it says there are two types of governors. Velocity and vacuum. From what you are describing it sounds like you have a Velocity type. Shop manual says there is no repair of this unit if it is defective must be replaced.Should be two fittings on this unit either at the back or front depending on how you have it installed. Your adjusting body will be on one side or the other again depending on how you have it installed. Top fitting fitting closer to the side with the adjusting body is vacuum from the carb.Lower fitting is to the distributor. Both of these fittings should be one above the other and slightly offset from each other. I have not worked on governed trucks so am unsure as to how removing it will affect your trucks operation. You may have to look at how the un governed trucks were set up an go that route.

Don't know about your 1961 F600, but here are two types - V8 and 6 cyl. from the 64-72 manual. May not be of too much help although both use the 12450 group governor.

Maybe this will assist some, though. I can enlarge if needed.

It looks like the top illustration is like mine. I think mine is vacuum as the lines are connected to ports that have some degree of vacuum.

I may just block off the ports and test it out.

Appreciate the feedback

now it runs!

After sitting for years, I finally got it to run! And seems like the govenor I stubbed off/disconnected doesn't make any difference. Now on to the wheels/brakes.
