I need some help here. I have a recurring problem with the studs snapping off on the passenger side front hub on my '77 F-150 4x4.
There is an excessive amount of toe-out, I guess you would call it. would this put pressure on the studs and cause this to happen? This is about the 3rd tome thi has happened. I just recently repacked the wheel bearings and replaced the hub on that side, so right now I am at a loss. Anyone have any ideas???
I would guess if you've got enough toe out to cause this it's severe, ruining the tire and dangerous. I would get an alignment right away. Other causes might be foreign material between the hub and wheel mounting surface or improper torque. Probably about 110# for stock steel wheels.
You can actually adjust toe pretty close with a tape measure and pipe wrench to get in the ball park.
Rich,
This problem is usually associated with a high torque application. What are you running?
What kind of rims are you using? Aluminum? Deep Dish?
Give me the facts on alterations from factory intent.

What size tires are you running? How many studs do you bust at a time? Is there any wear in the lug holes in the rim? I had that problem a couple times and i had to replace the rim.:-X12
I agree. Worn lug holes in the rims is a common cause for broken studs. With worn lug holes, you can torque the nuts down to specs, but they still won't grab the rim like they should. The rim can still flex a bit at the hub, and if the hub is engaged, it can actually slam the sides of the studs into the rim as you take off.
Also, if you have a stud break, you should replace the studs on either side of the broken one too due to the increased stress on the remaining studs.

I am running a 33" tire on a stock rim. The lug wholes on the rim had a slight wear when I replaced the studs the last time. I also replaced the rim the last time this happened, so I think something else is contributing to the problem other than worn lug wholes on the rim.
What is the proper lug torque on a '77 F-150 4x4? I think I have been at 110#, but don't quote me. Thought after the first time the lugs were working loose and so I used thread locker.
I am running centerlines on all others, and I almost lost the tire the last time this happened. I am making a trip to the junk yard this weekend, and I am going to be changing out the rim, steering knuckle and ball joints within the next week or so. I will also replace the steering linkage.
