I'm looking at buying another Ford, go figure. The one I'm looking at is an F-250 with the straight six (300cid?) a 4 speed manual that sits high on the tranny hump, the 205 transfer case and the guy says the front and rear end are Dana 60's.
First things first,
Does that sound like a good combo?
Next, how do I verify these are the parts?
I don't know how to identify the rear and front end and transfer case for what they are.
Is that 4spd manual a good tranny of is it crap?
I looked under the hood and all the emission controls on my 81 seemed to have moved away can this be explained and would this be good for performance or not?
i have a 78 f 250 i have the 351 m 4 speed dana 60 rear and 44 in front and have the 205 transfer case it is a good combo so what you have would be a good combo the 300 six has a lot of torque and are good engines.i think your trans should be the same as mine i think it is a np 485 or something like that im not sure of number i dont think they changed that other then clutch disk size. when i bought clutch for my truck they asked me what size disk i had a 11 or 12 inch mine has the 12 which is listed as a f 350 and for transfer case it should be a 205. if you look on rear and front pan covers sometimes there are tags that say what they are but if they are not there look on case by the yokes there will be some numbers if you post them somebody on site can help you decifer what you have but it should be a 60 in rear and a 44 or 60 front which are both good so as far as combo goes i think it is a good one hope this helps you out
For a quick check, measure the front axle tube. If it 2 5/8", it is a D44, if it is 3", it is a D60. Either one is plenty strong, and much better than the TTB crap used later. Also, the tranny would be an NP435. I have one of these in my truck, and it is much stronger and provides a more positive shift than the T-18's. One thing to watch out for, though, is to not drive with your hand on the shifter. If you do, it will wear out the shift forks. The 300-6 is plenty strong, I have one in my F-250, and love it.
Was just wondering if anybody has ever turbo'ed a 300-I6 after they built it for that application and what would be the projected HP and torque numbers for such a setup------That would make one heck of a all-around motor for general use.....fd
to be 100% sure of what tranny you have you can visually look at it under the truck. if the bottom half is boxy looking (sorta like this |__| )then its a borg warner t-18. but if its angled ( sorta like this |__/ ) then its a np 435.
I would double check the front 60, they only came in the snowfighter package and the high GVW package on the 250's....to be sure check and see if it has balljoints. If it does its a 44. If there are caps with four bolts on top and bottom, its a 60. Now if its a 60.....thy go for 900-1100 bucks..
Oh, for the transmission, they are easy to identify. The np435 has an aluminum top, and the t-18 has an iron top, along with saying borg warner on the driver side
