Shipping Odd stuff

If I were to ship a rowboat - no trailer.. just a rowboat and oars.. from one location to another where the shipper would have to go to the location and get the thing.. is there a shipping company that would do such a thing? I thought I remember reading here a while back about a shipper that does such a thing - they package and ship weird things that are odd to ship.

Reason being - I'd like to buy a dumb no-frills aluminum rowboat. I need something sturdy and light like an aluminum rowboat.. but I have determined through months of searching want add presses, ebay, etc.. they are next to impossible to find used. Well, I found one out in Illonois, but for obvious reasons the guy won't ship unless the shipper arranges for 100% of all aspects of shipping (I haven't bid on it, I just wanted to see the shipping costs).

I thought I remember someone mentioning a company that could do this on FTE, but it was a long time ago.

You'll pay a ton for shipping. I bet it would be cheaper to buy a new one than have one shipped.

Yeah, that's what I'm pretty much figuring that's what the deal would be - it'll cost more on shipping, far more than it's worth.

Sometimes, and its a big if, you might be able to hook up with a local trucker who is traveling that way and coming back with room for the boat. Here in the Finger Lakes area most just park them in the weeds, and don't advertise them. There are a few in the swap sheets. Try the online classified section in nearby papers. Good Luck, George

well a ball park figure would be about 350.00 to 400.00 to ship truck freight and it must be tied down to a skid the same size.

Yea, on top of that it could easily be damaged or "lost" during transport and then you will really be up a creek without a paddle. Or a boat.

Better, in my opinion, to buy new and local.

I work in the hardwood flooring industry, We regularly ship pallets, up to 10 foot long, a rowboat would be no problem. The light weight might even be a plus. I would definitly crate it up.

Delivery will be ALOT cheaper if its to a business rather than residential, and cheaper yet, if you ship to a trucking terminal.

We ship ROADWAY, ABF and a few others. It might not be as costly as you'd think
Another company who specializes in shipping vehicles (scooters, motorcycles) is forwardair

Well, it just so happens that the company I work for has a shipping warehouse and they ship in and out by the multiples of truckloads every day. I've used them to ship semi-big stuff (computer stuff) before. It's just a matter of finding a shipper that will crate it for me without me being there.. heh.. again it might be more than it's worth, but I can easily ship to our warehouse.

ABF does some goofy stuff, so will ROADWAY, both are smaller carriers that have to find creative ways to fill trucks.

On major note on Forward Air, depending on how close you are to their terminal(always close to a cargo airport) they can get ridiculously expensive quickly. I work only 35 miles from a Forward Air Terminal, and it is usually cheaper to our customers for us to hire a local truck to deliver something to the FA terminal than it is to have FA pick up.

One other note: with the Yellow-Roadway purchase of the USF network, expect another LTL price jump. Its never good for shippers when Truck Cos. buy each other.

Well it turns out I won't have to ship anything. I finally found a boat locally here in NJ! Shipping was provided my ME on top of our mini-van (my truck is without-carb at the moment). Thanks again for all the suggestions.. perhaps this thread will benefit someone who may have to ship something odd one day.
