What degree thermostat should be in a 97 F350 PSD. I just put a new one in.......and i can't get it to open up. I ran the truck for a day w/out a tstat and it cooled fine. New tstat is now in and the truck is running too hot. The bottom radiator hose is cool. I think I have a 195 degree tstat in there. Any suggestions?
Sounds like a faulty t-stat to me.
I also read some posts somewhere that stated something about a long stem t-stat or the lack of a stem and not enough room in the housing for correct operation. You might have a wrong t-stat there.
Personally I have never been inside of a powerstroke thermostat housing so I can't offer much more than this.
I agree with kwik your t-stat sounds like a junk one. get another and try it. you should have a 195 long stem stat. its the same stat that superduties use so you could just do the 203 stat that is talked about on here. have you had the water pump replaced? the water pump from a 94.5 to a late 95 is different but will bolt up and work on your truck the only difference is the t-stat housing. the early ones use a shorter stat and later one use the long stem stat.
i have installed both types and actually found a problem with napa's pump becasue they list the later pumps for the earlier application. big mess!!
I have found that my truck needs the short thermostat. I have put two different ones in from the local autoparts store. All they sell is the 203F tstat. My truck runs very warm and will not open the tstat. They can order a 180F Tstat or I can get one from the Ford dealer, which calls for a 195. I am going to try that one tonite.
