sorry guys but im no mechanic so here goes...i have a 1977 f250 4x4 started it this morning and drove to work(6 miles)9 hours later started it and drove home no problem.then a few minutes later tried to start it and just got a constant clicking noise.is this the battery(lights seem to work) or something else?
any input would be helpful like i said im no mechanic so i appreciate any knowledge you could share...by the way i put a new starter in two months ago and since i only have the truck a short time i dont know how old the battery is.
thanks again, mike
Could be a bad battery, but it sounds like either a bad connection at the battery cable or a bad alternator. Try jump starting it and check the voltage at the battery with a volt meter. It should be 13 to 14 volts while running.
Mine clicks also when the battery is dead, or at 6volts anyway.
Im not sure if my alternator is going bad on again off again or what tho, In the process of finding out. Oh, and when it was running itwas reading 13.6volts.
All my connections are good and grounds are also decent.
Sorry not much help to you, but when i figure out my problem ill be sure to tell you, maybe we habe the same thing goin on here
But yeah, check your batt with a volt meter, gives some idea anyway.
Where was the reading of 13.6, across the battery or a gauge in the truck. Might be a sticking voltage regulator I assume this was changed same time alt was replaced thats always a good practice. Also a check with a meter to see if there is a drain on the system while parked would help as well.

thanks to all...battery checked out fine, solenoid fine, alternator was also fine.
new starter bound up and that was the problem.it was still under warranty ,replaced free, installed and the beast lives again......
