Vapor lock
What is Vapor lock and how do you prevent?? I have a 93 F-150 351 EFI auto 4x4 short bed 196,000 miles. She runs great all winter but I'm getting the "cranks but won't start" problem during hot weather. It starts great in the mornings but when warm, will not fire. I've changed the fuel pump and eec. I'm thinking it is vapor locking but I'm not quite sure what that is. I'm going have a bubby check spark and fuel but it seems to run everytime I need it not to (irony). I love this truck and hate to get rid of it but sometimes I want to set the damn thing on fire. Towed it once. Any info??....

Vapor lock is when the fuel coming through the lines gets too hot and becomes "vapor". Since the system wont work unless its liquid and at a certain PSI you get starting problems when hot and some extreme cases will stall out. The best way to stop this is to insulate your fuel lines, as it prevents them from getting too hot. Also might be a good idea to check your Fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Also check your codes as there might be a solution there as well. Hope this helps.

Vapor lock was more prevalent when fuel pumps were on engines and fuel lines ran alongside exhaust pipes. The vapor would not allow the fuel pump to create enough suction to move fuel thru the lines to the pump diaphragm. Just one more reason they went to electric fuel pumps in the tank far away from the heat.
