Brakes..How many miles before replace???

I have a 1-year old Escape...not quite 10,000 miles (15,000 km) - mostly highway driven...... past couple of days, have experienced 'thumping' when braking.......have made an appointment to bring Escape in to Ford on Monday...Question.....If the pads need to be replaced...or worse.....doesn't this seem way too soon............???? Please comment. Thanks.

Thumping is most likely the rotors being out of round, the pads just follow along. If the rotors are out, replace them with better quality and also replace the pads with low dust type.

Warped rotors could have been caused by driving through a deep puddle when the rotors were hot, or by the lug nuts not being evenly torqued, or by a defect.
Could just as easily happen to a Ferrari.

Until you find out what the problem is, don't assume it is a "problem" with the Escape.

Shouldn't' need pads yet. We started to hear noises on the wife's '95 Escape.. Not really thumping. Maybe more like squawking. Just needed brake service done. Guess things were starting to cease,

Okay........Here is what happened:

Dropped off Escape...was told the warranty on brakes is 1 year or 20,000 km............I bought the truck 1 year and two weeks ago....yes two weeks after the warranty.!!!!..........

Got a phone called about an hour later.......was quoted a price for the work!!!

I couldn't believe it.!!!......after some conversation ---- I asked the rep to go back and talk to manager!! He did and called back.....there would be no charge--thankfully.......and obviously they realized that I would not give up on this.

Here is the conclusion:

As per dealer's completed work order: "inspected and found that the L/F rotor is badly scored and both front rotors are flaking on the inside. Cleaned and serviced front brakes. Replaced both front rotors."

Obviously, there is a good ending -- dealer came through--with coaxing but came through, nonetheless....but I am still concerned that this happened to an Escape with 10,000 miles (15,000 km)!!

Any comments??

My folks have an '01 Escape and they are putting on their 3rd set of rotors today at 41k on the clock, which is absolutely ridiculous! Not sure why but the right front side just keeps grinding and pads are down to metal already.

Sounds like the caliber is sticking and need a little TLC.

The OEM rotors are pretty much disposable and usually cannot be turned. I replaced them on my first Escape with some standard Raybestos rotors and never had any problems (also went with some ceramic pads due to brake dust). The OEM pads will last a long time if you can stand the dust (pre-2005 had more dusting issues). But the rotors will wear out before the pads.

I Get 50k Per Set Of Pads And Rotors. What Are You Doing To Your Brakes To Only Be Getting 15k. The Dealer Did Say I Went Further Than Usual, But Over Double? By The Way You Have To Replace Your Rotors Anyway So Dont Be Afraid Of A Little Squeeking And Grinding, If It Stops They Work, I Probably Got An Extra 10k That Way. Actually I Bet I Would Have Gotten More, But I Was In A Head On With $12,000 Damage To The Front (anyone Wanna Buy It? Lol) And I Think The Caliper Was Effected Because The Pad Wore Into The Rotor On An Agle On One Wheel In The Front. All The Other Breaks Were Fine At 50k Accept The One That I Believe Might Have Been An Overlooked Detail At The Bodyshop. Still I Guess I Cant Complain. Sofar.

I had my front pads replaced and rotors resurfaced at 35,000 miles on my '02 Tribute. Those pads are still good at 92,000 miles. The rear drums are still original. I also tow quite a bit so I am very pleased with how long my brakes have lasted. I just replaced the front pads on my Mustang GT and they lasted for 81,000 miles so I seem to get a lot of miles out of my brakes.

05 Ford Escape

My wife has an 05 Escape XLT with 46,000 miles and I recently rotated the tires and inspected the brake pads and disc's and did not notice any untimely wear. Under normal braking conditions (city/highway mix) brake pads should last 50,000 miles and the disc 150,000 miles. Cross drilled performance rotors may be available for the Escape that would aid in cooling, prolonging the life of your rotors.

I'm a Ford tech and I think the pads are pretty good, alot better than the Focus pads, they suck. I think the rotors are the same, not compared part numbers but they are almost identicle. The rotors I do not like my wife's has 40k and they are 22.12mm which 22 is the minimum machined width. I have one on my rack right now waiting for pads to come in. 15k on it and the rotors are under 22mm and warped horribly. The rotors are rarely turnable on the Escapes as they are so thin to begin with and it shoes in the form of warpage. And whats worse for that particular 05, pads are about 135 and rotors are about 135 apiece.

Those prices seem unusually high. My private mechanic usually will do a brake job which includes rotors, pads, greasing the caliper rails, checking, adjusting and cleaning the dust out of the rear brakes for about 350, which includes his labor charge.

Whatever happened to the $99 brake job???
