The rear view mirror on my van windshield keeps falling off after a while. I have nothing hanging on it.
I used that glue they sell in the parts store for rear view mirrors a couple of times and followed the directions to a T, but it only lasts a couple or three months and falls off again. I've tried using Super glue
and get a little better results but it just fell off again. I just tried some new Super glue called Advanced Extra Strength and I'll see how long that lasts. Anybody got anything better to use ?
The problem is not with the glue, but getting the surface of the glass clean enough.
Try getting a small can of acetone (the stuff in fingernail polish remover) from a paint supply or hardware store and REALLY clean the glass and the metal block. Apply the adhesive and stick it back on. Let is set up for 1 full day before attaching the mirror.
P.S. Super glue will not hold for very long under any circumstances, Use the correct adhesive for rearview mirrors. Throw any unused portion away as it will not keep once opened.

I tried several times to get that rearview mirror to stick.
I drove the car over to the local glass shop and asked them how much they would charge me to stick the thing on.
"Free!!!"
The manager said as long as I considered his shop, the next time I needed a windshield put in, they would put the mirror on . . . No charge!
the professional shops use a special glue. the glue they use is a 2 part epoxy they cure it with a special uv light. the stuff in the tube never comes close
I use Locktite 'Rear View Mirror Adhesive'. Clean both surfaces, get the old adhesive off until they are smooth, clean with rubbing alcohol and follow the intructions. Take the bracket out of the mirror before you install it(the bracket). After it has cured, install the mirror. I noticed that you live in SE Texas, the windshield in your vehicle gets extremely hot and that weakens the adhesive. Do you have a 14 inch mirror? try a 10 incher. Try and auto glass installer for the locktite. I carry a kit with me all the time in my glasstruck and install them for free. Come on up to the Panhandle and I'll do yours. It's only about 600 miles!!!
I've had very good luck using 5 minute epoxy .
Use a razor blade to remove all traces of the old glue first, then use masking tape to hold the mirror mount in place for a day or so. I've done this with two trucks, one over five years ago, and still holding. The other lasted two years till I sold the truck.
The mirror glue kits they sell never did seem to work right for me.
Next time it falls off I'm gonna try all of the above suggestions except going up to 66 Rangers house. $2.15 a gallon x 600 miles.... nah. Thanks anyway.
