i am looking to buy a Powerstroke, but i know that diesels last A LOT longer than gas engines, so what i am getting at is, how many miles is considered a lot on a psd? 150k, 200k, 250k? when does stuff start to go downhill? where would you guys "not consider" buying one when it comes to mileage? thanx.

 

my '95 when i bought it had about 184K on it. beat up work truck. since then i have put a tranny, tires, glow plug replay and plugs, and a few other things not to mention "wants" instead of needs like a nice stereo system, stacks and whatnot. now, my truck is at nearly 209K 16 months after i got it. if they have been taken care of properly, they will last. if i came upon another '95 with 200K on it, and knew it service record, and they were sellin cheap, i'd grab it up like chocolate cake.

 

the mileage is not the concern it's how well it has been serviced and how well the air has been filtered entering the turbo/motor. their is lots of guys i've seen well into the 300k range 400 and 500. oil and air filters are key to good long running motors.

I have seen plenty that have gone over 350k, but my dads 97 was junk at 80k, never dusted, regular maint. but it just was never right. It depends on care, my 00 had 95k when I bought it, I wanted lower, but coudn't find another regular cab 6-speed 4x4 XLT. It has 113 on it, and I plan on keeping it until it isn't runnable(emissions, fuel costs, ect) I think the pickup will fall apart before the motor if properly taken care of. I wouldn't want to go out buying a truck with over 200k, but alot of people do.

 

Too many variables to say flat out what the cut-off point is here. 100,000 miles of work/haul/tow, or 100,000 miles of constant stop and go are a lot more than 100,000 miles of strictly highway use. I would rely more on acquiring service records and a thourough inspection of any vehicle I was considering than stictly by mileage only. You must remember that even if the truck is maintained perfectly, miles of hard use lead to premature problems with wheel bearings, brakes, transmissions, transfer cases, and other such parts. Don't rush when buying a vehicle....use you best judgement. A close inspection with a fine-toothed comb will uncover things that will either encourage you, or DIScourage you about a used vehicle.........

dusted, motor got dirt somehow, leaky air-filter lid, bad air filter, loose hose ect. Dirt is probably the fastest way to ruin a motor.

 

gottcha, never heard that term is all. i rebuilt a kids RM80 a few yrs back and i always clean the intake and box, filter when i do a rebuild... then the grandfather comes in 3 weeks later says no compression. i take it apart and find alot of sand from the pit inside the carbs venturi and air boot is now half off the carb. dumped it in a puddle .
wants me to warranty a bike that was for competition and was not warranteed from suzuki to begin w/.. not my fault you never maintain your machine.
