Hi, Greg.
That sounds like the vent. Hard to imagine fluid making it up that far. It must really be foaming up!
Everybody seems to be steering you in the right direction
At least the motor is running nicely.
I haven't even got to ride in mine yet. This BIG truck business is expensive.
Besides...
After all you have done whats a little tranny work?
Is the warranty still valid? send it back. Just don't tell them what it was sitting behind. LOL
Greg...I was looking at the Saturday Nite Special converter in the Summit catalog and it said, "great if you have an engine a little more powerful than stock." Did the TCI techs recommend this converter for such a powerful motor as yours? As you probably know, stall speed is not a fixed thing, it will be different for different HP engines. That converter will stall at 2000 on my almost stock 390, but will be higher your motor, it's all about torque.
They way it acted after our last pass at the track, and my gut instincts told me it was low on fluid, especially given the fact that there was a small leak on the drive to the track.
But.... we had that puppy waaaaaay hot and heat soaked after the pass given all the fan issues etc.
If it were me (read, here is my suggestion), I would drain the fluid and the TC (it does have a drain plug, right?) and drop the pan. Inspect the bottom of the pan for any obvious "stuff".
Then put on a new filter (yeah I know brand new filter and fluid), check the torque on the valve body, re-check all the mounting bolts, put on a new gasket and re-fill with fresh fluid. Follow the book EXACTLY on the refill (chebys say put six in and start it, add 4 as you cycle thru the gears etc). And once it is refilled completely, mark the dipstick for reference.
Disclaimer: You will have to add a small amount due to the cooler and hoses running to it. Now is a good time to flush the cooler out recheck the clamps on the external oil lines to the cooler.
I think all the heat probably burnt the fluid and it may be over full.
As far as the stall speed, yeah all that torque will allow your engine to stall higher than a stock 390. But it should not have changed at the track.
Besides, $20-30 bucks for fluid, filter and gasket is a lot cheaper than a new trans. And you can do it in the ac with doors closing out the rain.
It is good to hear from you Randy. Please get us some updates on your project. I definitely understand about this hobby being expensive.
My transmission is long out of warranty. Getting the transmission out of my truck seems to be more work than getting the motor out.
greg
I missed alot of what has been going on with your truck, but it sounds like once the trans is fixed you should be good . for awile anyways. Considering Gregs law that is.
I have been on the 4x4 forums lately. But I missed all you guys so much I had to come back home. You all are much more fum than the Off Road forum.
