I have a 91 f250 right now. I've been going mudding a lot lately and have been having a lot of fun. Im looking basiclly for a cheap way to get more performance for off road. Anything that can get me a lot of articulation/clearance for cheap?
I have a 91 F250 with a 460.
Set it up with the basic mods(headers, intake, exhaust, chip, ES3000 Shocks), and just went to some AT 285/75/16 tires a couple days ago. I noticed I deffinatly have most the power I need. but traction wise I know I need more than I can get. I do a lot of highway driving so AT's where pretty much a must. I'm on a budget at 17 years old so I can't go to big.
Bang for my buck what is going to help me get the most traction? Was looking into some Air Lockers, but the price was pretty spendy.
ATs are worthless... I have them too. Im 17 as well, so I know about hte budget thingy. Just get some buckshot mudders, they are $110-$130 per tire (for 35's, which you can fit). They will wear faster than AT's, but will actually give you traction...BTW, traction is not going through a mud hole at 30 mph... thats a little thing we call momentum. Anyways, the mudders are cheaper and will probably cost less in the long run, even if they do wear out faster.
You can get good HP gains if you reroute a line from your AC system to your PCV valve... it cools the pistons down and adds like 120 hp...
And on the lift, do a search in this forum for "shackle flip" or "shackle reversal"

I am going to be keeping with the AT's for now just because they are brand new.
I don't see how doing the AC system will do a thing.... the PCV Valve is a crank case breather.... is there a post about that? Did you mean to say 12 HP?
Have a detriot locker in mind for now also, along with the flip.
I think somebody was just having a little fun, oricle
I can just see somebody digging up that post a year from now and trying that...
Lockers won't really do you much good in mud with a/ts. Rawpower hit the nail on the head that if you want more traction you simply need to step up in tires. Possibly you could sell the a/ts to fund a cheap set of mud tires like buckshots?

Figured thats what he was doing
I'll look into getting a set of mud tires. Still going to look into a Detriot EZ Locker.
Looks like I won't be able to pull a TTB Shackle reversal. Scratch that idea. Just going to go with a detriot locker.
Hahaha...sorry, I didnt check what you had for a front driveline... oops, haha.
A locker isnt going to get you anywhere with AT's... Im open front and LS rear, all 4 spin with my AT's because there is no resistance. Ive got about 1/3- 5/12 tread leaft on mine. Im going to sell them for $50 to get them off my hands.
You've never hear of the PCV valve trick? Yeah, 120 hp!!!
You might want to lock into a lock right for what you want to do (cheap to, 360 bucks through summit racing, i'm looking into getting one for my bogger). If you want to keep your at's you might want to consider going to a military auction and pick up a good sett of hummer tires (newer the better, as old -in terms of age and not wear-tires won't get you anywhere in terms of the hummer tires as they are hard to begin with), who knows you might even be able to get a set still mounted on the hummer beadlocks.
tires are the key to offraoding. nothing beats them. everything else comes into play after tires. FIRST get a good set of tires (regardless of price, it'll be worth it in the long run). then and only then look into lockers which will keep all fours rubbers spinning all the time! also depending on your size tire of choice you may or may not want to lift for better clearance.
the 35" bfg mud terrains on my old powerstroke have 85,000 miles on them(time for a new set though)......so get you a set of those if you have to do alot of street driving, they(or any mud terrain type tire) will kick any a/t's butt off the highway, and you will have an excuse to get a locker or two
