Weird Things You Do During a Restoration

I was curious if anyone has something a little "different" they do when they restore a vehicle or tear it apart for fixing.

For example, when I put a flareside on my truck I spray painted the date on the inside fender so I'd always remember when it finally became a flareside. I'm replacing the fenders, doors, and hood in a few weeks and the few people that helped me do this are going to write their names on the inside panels. I was even thinking about taking a couple pictures of us all next to my torn apart truck and put them in a plastic bag and hide them somewhere in the truck. I may sound weird, but I thought they were neat idears. I hope I'm not the only weird one out there though....

My father had us all chip in to make a "time capsule". When we finished the new house we built, he made a hidden section under the sink, so that if something ever came up where we got rid of the house, we were to dig it back out.

I on the other hand am an obsessive photo taker. I like to do step by steps with the pics and then write little articles on the tips and tricks I found helpful while doing this.

The only weird thing I do is usually give the car a "theme song". Something that's gotta be cranked up real loud on it's 'maided voyage' once it's completed. Kinda an inspiration while building the car. May sound strange, but cars and music go together in my book, and sometimes a certain song fits the car's personality.

I take pictures, put parts in bags, boxes and cans, and then still forget where everything goes. Plus I always have stuff left over. Maybe that's not unusual. One other thing I do is to put an envelope in the glove box. When I think about it, I'll put a few bucks in the envelope every now and then. After a while it starts to add up, and I'll use it for something I need for the restoration. It's kinda like my little secret bank account.

If you have done many restorations, you always have that moment when you hold a part in your hand and ask yourself. "What is it and where the hell does it go?"

my restoration "little different" thing that i do is that it takes so long to finish it, that i buy another of whatever it is i am working on so i don't get withdrawl pains.when i did the pickup it took 2 years, so i bought a 79 to drive. as for the falcon, that is going to take 4-5 years, and i am getting another one next week hopfully.

Well, I put anti-seize on just about every metal connection and silicon grease on most electrical connectors. The wierd thing is I let my kids help paint the truck with good ole' Rustoleum

One truck they helped do the forest camo, on another one I painted all white and they and the neighborhood kids helped paint on the red stars with templates I made. They had a blast.

It talk to my truck. you should see the looks i get from the GF about what i say to it. But to her it's just a broke down truck to me it is under restoration why else would the engine be out?

I say stuff like, " I'm gonna give you an engine, 600hp, shave you till your slick as Abby's butt, i'm gonna give you a 3/8" diameter fuel line to hold an extra gallon of gas, your gonna be quick", Now i get crazy looks from her when i quote Robert Duvall like i sometimes do. But usually it's not that nice when i talk to it.

It's more along the lines of," Come on you POS, don't make daddy break out the big hammer" , 5min later "Damn skippy"

One time my brother was around and it fell off the jackstands and put a dent in the fender, i said ," That's alright, your uncle will take care of that" Or things like " I'll show you how your supposed to go together" , and " The bolt holes do line up but why wont the bolt go in dang it."

Oh well , i also Try to drive it the second the motor is in. and you gotta take that special lady, around the block with you in the truck with no hood, fenders, bed, doors, glass, seats, but hey it runs so lets go in a date. I usually get the NO. but one day she'll understand.

My dad thinks i'm nuts to, When her hears for the first time , "Come on show me some love" coming from the garage
he sprinted down the stairs to see what was going on.

I run my hand down my truck and sometimes tell it what i'm gonna do to it. Mabey i'm crazy but that's how i do it. That's during Resto, the 85, i treat like a lady.

here is the truck i'm restoring.

and the 351W

I know i'm nuts, but who cares

Whenever I finish a project, I always find the the most out of sight, non showing area, and give it a little scratch with something sharp. That way, when the inevitable ding happens, I can say "oh well, she was already scratched!

I was changing a auto transmission at work. Some one drew a smiley face on the flywheel. It made my day.
