What kind of jacks are you guys using for your lifted (4" or more) trucks? I'm considering getting a 60" Hi-Lift all cast jack for off-road use for my 2002 F350 4x4 PSD CC SB that has been lifted 4" with 35" tires. The stock jack seems kind of wimpy. I've heard of some guys using one of those aluminum racing jacks since they are light weight but what about the load capacity and lift height? You know these trucks are heavy.
I used the hi-lift mounting kit and bolted it up to the frame rails. I cheated a bit though, I didn't go for the hi-lift brand jack, I just got a farm jack that looks and works EXACTLY like the hi-lift (without the high price), and the hi-lift parts are even interchangeable with it. It gets pretty trashed under there though from the road conditions (mud, rain, sand, etc) even with the cover. It needs a metal shield of some sort to protect it better but it's up out of the way and still easy to get to if/when needed. Sorry for the quality of the pic, I took it with my phone.
I use the same craftsman truck/suv jack for the 99 bucks has a capacity i think of 3.5 tons and it is heavy and bulky but i throw it in my truck box. have needed it many times... i park my boat at my grandparents house since they have a huge house and lots of space.,.. well of course grandma parked her lincoln blocking the boat. well at 5 am when i went to go out i wasnt going to knock on the door or call so i took out my jack its a 4 wheel jack. I put that thing under the rear diff and jacked up the car and pushed it out of the way on the front wheels and the jack worked great. nice strong jack..
Just a heads up to you guys looking for a good price on a Hi-Lift jack. Check out your local Tractor Supply Company. They have the 48" Hi-Lift all cast jack for $48.48 plus tax. They can special order the 60" Hi-Lift all cast jack for $62.00 plus shipping and tax. I placed my order for the 60" on Tuesday 7-12-2005 and I picked it up today 7-15-2005. Shipping was $12.00 and my tax came to $5.18.
I had a 6" lift with 35" tires on an my old 77. The high lift was an invaluable tool for off roading for many reasons other than tire changes. Used it for winching and even sacraficed one to repair a buddies broken drag link. Would never travel with out it. That said here are a few things you may want to consider.
With my lifted 77 the spring droop was significant. I seem to remember the high lift being very near the top before the tire was off the ground. Not to bad on firm level ground or pavement, but it was a little scary when the ground was soft or the truck was on even a slight angle. I carried a 1x12x12 slab of plywood to back up the foot of the jack. I also noticed my brake line seemed to be very near its limit(stretch). After my first soft and un-level tire experience I bought a hydraulic bottle jack to put under the axle for tire changes.
The Hi lift also likes to be clean and lubricated. I used to make sure it was in working order before I hit the trail.
