winch size

Quick question. I am able to get a 8000 lb winch for $299.Is this a good price and do you think it is big enough to pull me out if I get into a situation.I have a 2000 F250 PSD with a 4'' lift with 35'' tires. I know the bigger the winch the better.....just curious as to what you guys go with. Thanks

With the stock weight of your truck, you could use it as the ancor and pull others out of sticky situations with an 8K winch but you probably will not be happy with it for pulling yourself out. Multiply weight of truck and suction created by mud and an 8K will have a tough time to say the least.

a 8k winch is to small. the 8k may just be a rating for rolling mass and not a stuck truck i use a 15k winch on my 75 and it gets the job done but i am going to a bigger one sometime.

I didnt even know they made bigger than 15 for automovie purposees (WOW). How much is a good price for a 12 to 15 new or used. I hate going out with friends cause none of their trucks can pull me out if I get in some holes Ive been in before.

the rule is 1.5 times the weight of your truck and your truck weighs roughly 7000 lbs, give or take.

I built it out of 3/8" steel and boxed channels and welded up a carrier, sticks out more than the Warn kit but my winch also has a spur gear thus a "worm gear"

Thumbs up The right size...

Life-long Philosophy ...

Figure out what the biggest size you could ever possibly need is... and get the next size up.

This works for winches, wrenches (but not wenches), tools, trucks and most all guy things.

Don't they have a 16.5k winch now??

What about buying that winch, along with a ****** block (or two), a tree saver strap, and some lengths of chain, to use it all for double-line winching? Wouldn't that theoretically turn that 8K into a 16K (very...slow) winch?

Check out this page for info on double-line winching:

a ****** block doubles the line strength, and theoretically doubles the pulling power, but as you are stating it will have the speed.

I guess it depends on how much you go out and think you might end up using it. if your going to use it a whole lot, it is worth having the bigger, but if its that once a year type thing (and only if you get stuck) and depending on how conservative of a driver you are. so long as you have enough cable on there to double it up, you have that option to pull most anything you should need to.

Then again, if your like most of us ... you'll buy the biggest one anyhow.
