ccv mod done - how much mist..?

ok, did the ccv mod last nite... i think the mosquitos got nearly a quart out of me before i was done... did the mod cheap... length of hose and a couple of hose clamps.. $5.98... 4" od pvc fitting... $1.29... that's it... i spliced the new hose to the original elbow with a little piece of junk gargen hose and sealed them together with electrical tape and a hose clamp... looks fine works fine... lining up the screws to get the cover back on was a trick... the 4" pvc fitting worked really well... best of all the fins on my turbo look GREAT..! nice and clean.. sharp... no nicks or chips at all...! so... here's the question for you guys... how much "mist" should be coming out... it pumps out pretty good on my mule... steady stream... but.. it's not really oily and i don't get more flow or pressure when the engine revs up... so... what has been your experience with this mod...? also... any recomendations for plumbing this into the exhaust...? what should i use and where should i tap into the exhaust..? thanks guys..!

I did mine a little different then most. I didn't reverse the valve cover piece. I just ran a hose a couple feet long and dumped it by the steering box and ended it if front of the front axle. It was too long but I was in a hurry. Anyways it made enough mist that people would stare at it from across the intersection and a couple people let me know it was overheating Later I cut it off at bumper hieght and you can't even see the mist anymore. But it does leave a few small drops of oil if it's parked for a long time.

I used 18 feet of hose and ran it all the way back to the vicinity of where the exhaust exits. That way, blowby gasses are seen as "just diesel smoke" to everybody. Getting it back there also eliminates foul odors.

Though I thought about doing it, I found plumbing it into the exhaust stream was just more trouble than it's worth. If you dump it into the exhaust too far forward, your exhaust gas backpressure might be more than you should have the crankcase pressurized to, and if it's too far back, it's pretty visible. You need an anti-backflow valve in the hose, too, to insure you're not pressurizing the crankcase. At any rate, there's the least amount of backpressure if you simply vent it to the atmosphere, unless you rig up some sort of venturi.

trust me... you did yourself a favor by not bothering to turn that cover around..! i WISH i had done it that way..! but oh well.. it's done now... i think i'm getting a better flow of air into my turbo as well... the stock peice of plastic that housed the connection for the hose blocked off a significant portion of the area the incoming air had to travel through... the new pvc doesn't block off anything... straight shot to the turbo..!

Johnny,

I turned the "dog house" around, and it was a good time to replace the o-rings.

I see you noticed the cross-sectional area you gained in your intake system, too. Pretty significant, I'd say.

I ran mine all the way back to behind the rear bumper pointed slightly down. You can not see the hose, but you can definitely see the smoke. Stinks like all get out also. That is normal though. IC boots stays a lot cleaner now also.

That's how mine was originally, but the blowby exiting mid-bumper was pretty obvious, so I just moved the hose closer to the exhaust pipe. It's hard to tell it's not exhaust when standing still, and when moving, what's the difference? ;-)))

yes i have to agree... this seems like a substantial restriction to the flow of intake air.... seems strange that they would make such a large indentation in this tube... i don't see that it's really needed... and it certainly doesn't help with smooth airflow...

mine isn't really smoke.. more like vapor.. not really oily.. if i hold my hand under it for a few seconds i can smell a faint oil odor and maybe a faint smell of diesel fuel.. i'm sure my intake parts will stay cleaner.. i would like to remove them and clean them, but i'll bet that is a HUGE amount of work...

one other question... would i have a higher rate of flow on this mist shortly after startup as the temps in the crankcase are coming up to operating temp...? could this explain why i seem to have more flow and pressure when i start the truck..? then it kind of slows up and becomes a steady slow flow of vapor..

I did what springer did except I plumbed it right into the exhaust dump, now you can't even tell it's dumping. :-)
