Was going to wash my truck. Had both wipers in the out position to clean windshield. Got distracted and when I came back decided to open hood to clean there first. Hood contacts the wiper blads and they snapped closed, leaving a nice crack in center of windshield from top to bottom.. I really did not think that landing on the rubber blades would crack it, wrong.. Sure glad I have comprehensive insurance coverage $50 dedutable.. Oh well, first chance i ever had to get money out of my insurance company..Moral of story , don't open your hood with wipers in the out position or have good insurance coverage..
FYI, pay close attention to who the insurance co. sends you to. make sure they know what they are doing and you don't have to use who the ins. co. says. It's your choice
I dont know about your STATE auto ins. laws. But hear in If your front windsheild gets cracked .[ front only ] The state pays for it .Through your auto ins.Check It Out

Keep in mind that the insurance company only owes the amount it can be replaced for. If you elect to have it done at a higher price, you may be required to pay the difference. Also, almost no dealership installs their own glass. They use the same people that the insurance company does. You can go to the dealer and pay the difference and you get the same windshield installed by the same person and you'rer only paying for the paperwork and profit for the dealer.
OSBORNK, The first part of your statement is a common myth used by insurance co. to scare their customers into using a specific shop. The autoglas industry is done today much like the health insurance industry. If you take your vehicle to a reputable glass shop they already have an agreement with the insurance co. as to what to bill for. They are not going to hand you an invoice for any difference. At least they don't in these parts.
As for using Ford glass, yes I would also, but any glass shop can get Carlite (manu. of Ford glass) products. You don't have to go to a dealer to get o.e. glass.
And yes you are correct in saying that most dealers don't install their own glass they call a local glass shop. But then again you are in a situation where if you have a problem you have too many parties involved. Deal directly with who is going to install the glass.
word of caution from someone who's been there pay CLOSE attention to them when they put remove the weather stripping that runs alongside the A pillars it has 3 Big clips and it can scratch your A pillars took a week for dealership to repaint the apillars
My insurance co. gave me a ajustment number..I can go to any shop authroized to replace glass, Ford garage or otherwise. $50. deductable no matter what they charge, I'm sure that is if they charge the going rate..

I adjusted claims for 31.5 years and it is no myth. You can use whoever you want but fair and reasonable is the principal that applies. Why pay more than the going rate for the identical product? I've seen many people pay the difference and the judge or Insurance Commisioners office agreed as it impacts the insurance rates of all customers.
ps. Have you ever read an insurance policy to see what it actually says and what you are actually entitled to? You may be surprised.
My windshield cracked just the other day. I called for a quote from the local (Chicago area) glass shop and they stated price of $325 installed. Does this seem reasonable? The glass shop stated it had the "Ford logo" on it and was not just plain glass.

I agree with requesting OEM glass. In the past we owned a Toyota Highlander and took a rock on highway 98. Originally our ins wanted us to go to safelite but we requested OEM glass. No hassles at all and we were happy with having Toyota parts. Needless to say, USAA handles all of our ins needs. Hopefully your ins will treat you the same.
Well, they installed my windshield yesterday..OE glass, and like they said only charge to me was the $50 deductable..Installed by Cindy Rowe Auto Glass, no problems..
Look at your insurance policy and see if it has glass coverage on it. Sometimes it's in there and you don't even know it. I know in my case my glass coverage is only like $1 a month and there is no deductable. Many states require this as it's a safety issue.
